New claims for unemployment benefits last week fell by a seasonally adjusted 12,000 to 323,000, a three-month low and better than economists were expecting, as they had been forecasting a small rise in new applications.

4. Christmas Season Hiring.
Check back after the first of the year to see more accurate numbers.

Caveat: This is the U3 report, a marvel of obfuscations and massaged statistic. To get a better idea on the real state of employment, see the U6 numbers.

5. It's amazing how the claims fall
When the people run out of benefits. A while back, I was unemployed, drawing unemployment checks. My benefits were running out, and I couldn't get a job anywhere. I applied at grocery stores, which I haven't done in YEARS...I was overqualified for those positions. The positions that I was qualified for just weren't out there. I managed to get extended benefits, but they were only going to be for another few weeks. Lucky me, I got a temp job...worked as a temp with no insurance, no sick time, no paid holidays, nothing for over a year, then got canned because I got really sick and missed three days of work in a row. I was told that I was "no longer a cohesive member of the team". Bite me! I didn't like the "team" anyway.

9. Do temp jobs offer unemployment benefits?
Or are you still off the 'unemployed' rolls? If so, has this been happening to all those temp jobs out there, keeping the rolls falsely low?

11. We have PLENTY of new jobs!
What are you all whining about?

We have PLENTY of new jobs.

It's just that they're all in the *military.*

In fact, since the beginning of this war, over 1,100 new soldiering jobs have been created through "attrition."

Bush also created over 3,000 job vacancies on 9/11 alone-- many of them in the lucrative Financial Services industry.

And, once the Bush Regime ferrets-out all those homosexuals, it will create nearly 65,000 new jobs in the military!

How about THAT!

And just in time, too, because our kids will be DYING to get into college, and if they make a KILLING in the military, they just might roll their wheelchair up to the podium to accept their Associates Degree at one of our best Community Colleges.

I bet we have American teens who would give their right arm (or multiple appendages) for a chance to go to college.

Does anyone else feel a draft?

Also, thanks to Bush's new vaccine policy, we will remove tens of thousands-- maybe millions-- of deadbeat seniors from the welfare rolls this year, transitioning them to permanent "underground housing."

That wouldn't have been possible under Clinton's program to insure flu vaccine manufacturers against un-used vaccines.

Paying for wasted vaccines? Oh, those Democrats!

How will we ever save Social Security with so many senior citizens SPENDING it? Do you think the Republicans would miss the grand opportunity offered by a good flu epidemic?

When will the Democrats ever learn that smaller government is best, even if that means we're the only civilized country that leaves vaccine manufacturing to the private sector.

We all know that large multi-national corporations always have our best interests at heart. Especially the pharmaceutical companies, or else they wouldn't have contributed so generously to the Republican Party.

Isn't it worth the guaranteed collateral damage of a couple million excess social security recipients to the flu virus this year, if it means we can have enough Anthrax vaccine to protect the vital lives of our politicians in the unlikely event of a biological attack?

14. sorry to hear that betty
I am retiring from my job of six years on Friday, the 3rd. I didn't want to get the treatment you received (but I guess at least I would have gotten unemployment insurance). However, another job was offered to me a week ago so I have a place to go, part time, and I can now collect SS at the full level. And I have Medicare, for what it is worth going forward. It all looks so ominous. I hope you can find something good in your area. Keep your chin up and do some visualizing about your ideal job. It might just materialize!

I was going to be looking around right after the Holidays. Cheap skates hate paying any of us for the Holidays, jeeze. And they pulled this loyalty family how dare you think of leaving thing on me just over a year ago!! Boy, that loyalty thing is a one way street- or freeway!
It's alright, I have a lot of skills, and it's fashion the people are just suched coked out back biting morons that I have had to develop some detachment over the years. They don't have much impact on my self esteem
