Pataki Creates French, Indian War Commission
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Gov. George Pataki has approved legislation creating a French and Indian War 250th Anniversary Commemoration Commission.

The 19-member commission is charged with promoting, from 2005-2010, the 250th anniversary of the war, mainly through the use of reenactments at places such as Fort William Henry overlooking Lake George.

The French and Indian War was one of a series of wars fought between England and France beginning in the late 17th Century, and was the first to begin in the New World. As a result of the war, France lost all of its colonies in North America to the English.

"The battles of the French and Indian War were the driving force for inspiring the values and ideals that led to the successful drive toward American independence, and the birth of freedom and democracy in the New World," Pataki said Tuesday.

1. Known as the Seven Years War in Canada
I suppose American independence had to wait for the British to defeat France in Quebec, but it is a bit of a stretch to call it an American victory, or that it had much to do with values or ideals. Pretty much a colonial struggle, I would say.

But I suppose the anti-French feelings this celebration might inspire could come in handy about now to Pataki and Bush.

2. Reporter is ignorant of history, geography or both
The claim that "France lost all of its colonies in North America" is correct only if St-Pierre, Miquelon and Louisiana are outside of North America.

3. It's amazing, isn't it?
Ignorance, repub war promotion and Francophilia all in one short article.

I'd just finished reading a piece in an actual paper that characterized Rather's retirement as "Nixonian". Wouldn't you imagine that the writer would have learned something about the 70's in a classroom somewhere?
