The most talked about man on the planet is coming to Halifax. U.S. President George W. Bush is slated to visit Nova Scotia briefly Wednesday to thank us for allowing 41 diverted jets to land here after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.

Several officials suggested the visit will be short and that Bush may not even leave Halifax International Airport. “It sounds like he’s just going to go in and out,” said one source.

The Halifax Peace Coalition had already organized a mock trial for Bush on Tuesday to prosecute him for war crimes in Iraq. The group also asked people to wear black armbands during the president’s Canadian visit “to symbolize the death and destruction the U.S. government has caused to other people and to the natural environment.”

And that’s when they thought he was just going to Ottawa.

The "thank you" regarding the jets is just a crass, base smokescreen, stage-managed by the White House to create a touchy-feely atmosphere.

Two thousand aircraft were parked across Canada on 9.11. In Vancouver, we took our laptops/wireless out to the airport so people could e-mail their folks back home (it was pandemonium out there), and ended up taking two couples home for two days. This is what friends do. Americans would do the same.

Don't buy into the "you're all heroes" bullshit. It's for the "stupid people", or the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides who handed out sandwiches, drinks, blankets and cell phones that day.

Give him what he deserves. Which is a big "get the fuck outa' here". Would the boys of Sunnyvale Trailer Park let this slide?

As I pointed out, this is what people do. I was tempted to say "Thanx" in reply to your post, but that would imply I did something "heroic" that day. Absolutely not. We did exactly what these people would have done for us. So I left it at "no problemo", because that's precisely what it was.

I will say this: we're now all lifelong friends with these folks (they're from LA), we've seen each other many times since, and we shared some life-altering experiences over those few days.

And we all, both us and our American friends, agree that GWB will NOT be mining our personal experience for his political gain. IT'S PERSONAL. Before, during or after the event, it was about US, not HIM.

Seems some experimental work showed the "highest-known production rate of hydrogen by high-temperature electrolysis" - and recovering usable fuel from the Athabasca Tar Sands in Alberta, Canada - the largest oil deposits in the world - and making gasoline requires only copious amounts of steam and hydrogen, both products of a reactor with good hydrogren generation. Alberta Hydrogren used in automotive fuel cells might replace 400,000 gallons of gasoline per day, but with no infrastructure for car use, the immediate use is recovering usable fuel from the Athabasca Tar Sands.
