Congressman: Some Republicans must drop out
Congressman: Some Republicans must drop out
By Kathy Kiely, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — The financial godfather of the California recall election says there's no way that actor-turned-candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger can replace Gov. Gray Davis unless some Republicans in the race drop out.

Darrell Issa, a Republican congressman who invested $1.75 million of his personal fortune in an effort to oust Davis, said he bases his conclusion on "pure arithmetic."

1. Arithmetic. Like stealing a car is cheaper than buying one.
Darrell's pretty good at 'arithmetic.'

2. Well, I don't see McClintock dropping out
McClintock might tell Arnie to drop out.

We don't want Arnie to drop out, or McClintock. We want the Republicans to split their vote!

I was gratified to see Dean standing alongside Davis asking for the defeat of the recall petition. With Big Dog and Hillary coming to California to campaign for Davis, together with Davis's apologies for his own failings and admission that he "got the message," I am starting to get confident that the recall will be defeated.

3. I also hope the tide is turning
Although the Dems took far too long to start responding--they could have nipped the recall in the bud at the beginning when the idea of collecting signatures was being bandied around. True, no one took it seriously, so it might be forgiveable. However, it was started by rethugs, so you'd think the Dem leadership would know by now that they'd stop at nothing.

4. Anyone See Issa With Wolf?
It was very amusing...he looked like he'd been lobotomized by Karl Rove...LOL.

Wolf kept pressing him to name which candidate he supported and dear ole Darrell couldn't say AH-NOLD like Mr. Rove wants him to...LOL. Could this loser actually be having a case of angst and guilt? I only wish. Or is it he just saw 1.5 mil of his go out the door and he ends up with the rubber weenie. I think this moron honestly thought he would slip through and be governor...that the GOOP leadership would be grateful for his buying this recall to either clear the field for him to run or offer him something bigger for him to get out. Ooops. LOL

6. It would be interesting if McClintock passed Arnold in a poll
McClintock's people need to pay someone to do a poll that shows him leading Arnold. Then he would have a strong case for demanding that Arnold drop out.

You would think that Arnold calling people "niggers" would be enough to force him out, but the media will probably ignore it because he's not a Democrat:

7. How dumb is Darrel Issa?
The ballots have been printed; dropping out doesn't mean a thing, and you can't "will" any votes you get to another candidate. It doesn't happen often, but we should take righteous pleasure in seeing Issa so neatly and thoroughly hoisted on his own petard.

8. Issa has been had
I'm sure Issa thought the GOP would reward him for spending his ill-gotten wealth to get the recall on the ballot. Instead they told him to drop out so Arnold could win.

Now McClintock is refusing to drop out. Even I, who would NEVER vote for McClintock, admire McClintock's cojones. I wouldn't be surprised if McClintock didn't receive more votes than Arnold.

9. As I recall (no pun intended)
The national Republican establishment was pronouncedly neutral on the recall effort until it qualified for the ballot. In fact, a number of Republican analysts were saying (quietly, to be sure) that a recall was not a good idea. Issa ignored them, and continued with his personal ego trip of a recall, and now he finds that the beast he created and unleashed has grown far beyond his power to control it. He was probably too busy making money to ready Mary Shelley, but there is a certain drollery to watching the story play itself out yet again.

10. The Torture Is Just Starting...
Looks like there's gonna be a lot of blood-letting and name-blaming within the California GOOP once the smoke clears on this mess...especially if Davis wins his portion of the recall and Bustamante wins Part B.

I can see scum like Rohrbacher, Cox, Rohrbacher and Dornan all blaming Wilson for the "Arnold debacle"...despite all of them throwing their "support" behind him. McClintock looks like he comes out of this mess a winner, even if he loses and will be of zero use to the Rove machine next year.

They've gotta have leaky colons in the RNC where the chance to get some kind of Repugnican spin/momentum in California is not only squandered but could backfire all across the West & Southwest next year (anyone know the status of that Nevada Wingnut recall there?). This recall could splinter the California Repugs for years to come. Let's hope!!

13. Heh, heh, I like the way you think
But if the recall goes down to defeat, doesn't that mean they won't go to the trouble and expense of counting the votes for the candidates? So, while it would be extra humiliating for the recall to fail and Bustamonte to get the most votes, the first eventuality precludes the second.

14. It May Not Be Rove's Waterloo...
But I see a lot of egg on a lot of Repugnican faces if Davis survives the re-call...wasting the entire effort and acting as a SECOND Davis mandate in less than a year. And if Bustamonte beats both Ahnold and McClintock...even though that election is moot...then out comes the Monday morning quarterbacking...NeoCon's old favorite pastime...as to who lost the recall! It will be worth watching/listening.

This has got to hurt the national party no matter what since Davis' vindication will be akin to Clinton's...and making the GOOP look very inept. If there's Rupgnican knife-letting with a recall in Nevada...chances are that will fall into next year's primary cycle and could create a mess for Chimpy along his way to stealing another nomination.

This is like the home team losing a double-header and one starting pitcher will blame the other for who sucked worse. Rove might as well pull the bucks out of the state (the West Coast for that matter) since his boy will take whatever fallout is left from this recall circus in November.

I don't know, but will there be another major statewide battle in California in 2004? It'll be interesting if Whistleass even bothers to show his ass in the Golden State (except for those quickie fundraisers) if this scenario envelops.

For the first time in a long time, I feel the need to gloat. But not just yet!
