Protesters mass for Bush Canadian trip

Protesters mass for Bush Canadian trip

Ottawa, Canada, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Protesters plan to roll out the "un-welcome mat" for U.S. President George W. Bush when he visits the Canadian Parliament next week.

Protesters also plan to pressure Prime Minister Paul Martin to reject requests to join in a missile defense with the United States and to help in Iraq, the Toronto Sun said Friday.

"There will be solidarity actions from Vancouver to Halifax," said James Clarke of the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War. "It won't be something that's just concentrated in Ottawa and Quebec, but also in places like Flin Flon, Manitoba, and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan."

Protesters to light up Hill

By KATHLEEN HARRIS
Sun Media
Nov 26

Peaceniks, pot puffers, grannies and gays are all planning to give a cold Canadian welcome to President George W. Bush. Wearing black armbands and lighting up big joints on Parliament Hill, bus and car loads of protesters will converge in the capital to dump on the recently re-elected leader. Satellite demonstrations are also planned for cities and towns coast-to-coast.

...

B.C. marijuana activist Marc Emery will show his disdain for Bush by lighting up a 13-inch, 25-gram joint below the Peace Tower. The huge doobie's big enough to share with about 100 protesters, he said.

"It's to clarify that we want an independent drug policy," he said. "We feel the biggest push is coming from the U.S government to maintain criminal sanctions."

Claiming the president represents death, the Sierra Club of Canada is declaring a "national day of mourning" to coincide with Bush's visit. The environmental organization is encouraging Canadians to dress in black and tie black ribbons on porches, trees, car antennae and Christmas decorations.

Protest plans force Bush to curtail Ottawa visit

By Levon Sevunts
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

TORONTO — President Bush won't have to rescue his Secret Service bodyguards during his upcoming visit to Canada as he did recently in Chile, Canadian security officials said.

But with thousands of protesters expected to demonstrate against Mr. Bush, the White House decided to cut short his visit to Ottawa and travel to Halifax instead.

...

Tens of thousands are expected to brave the cold to protest Mr. Bush's policies in the Middle East and the proposed missile-defense program. Even the Canadian Parliament wasn't considered a safe enough ground by White House officials.

Stephen Harper, who leads the Conservative Party and is the head of the official opposition, speculated Wednesday that Mr. Bush declined to address the Parliament for fear of heckling by members of left-wing opposition parties.

being anti-American....What we are is anti-George Bush!....We like the American people!....Also, I wonder how much of it will be shown on American networks?.....

4. I think your question answers that concern.
How much will be shown on American networks? I doubt much, if any. Remember how his own inauguration in 2001 was sanitized? His limo was egged, and I don't think many Americans saw that footage until Farenheit 911.

I rarely watch TV news anymore, and hardly ever American news, so I don't know the answer: was there US coverage of the anti-Bush protests in Chile?

,...many of us embrace you to the point that we are making plans to join you *grin*.

It may take me a little while since I finally landed a job (after a treacherous 30 months of unemployment); but, my plan is to tuck away every penny to meet requirements for getting myself and my only son in your territory. Hope you will embrace us on that day.

Meanwhile, I'll be here cheering you onward!!!

9. Give * hell, dearest Canadians.
Canadians are so cool! No offense taken if they any have disdain for us Americans. After all, it took a majority (if dubious) to reelect the chimp. America has become the WalMart nation - we're a bunch of dopes who don't give a rip about the rest of the world.
Show the chimp the welcome he TRULY deserves!

PS I don't watch network news anymore, either. I did a few nights ago and it confirmed my decision. Boiled down, dumbed down "news" w/ a right wing slant. If I had cable, I'd be watching CBC.

truth.

This is some supreme ironic cosmic payback. After bush* banning your cattle, calling you names for not supporting an illegal and immoral war, for saying that the quality and safety of the drugs in your country cannot be depended upon, and for just plain dissing you for the past four years, the little beggar is now down on his hands and knees begging for your blessing.

It's payback time. Do the world proud Canadians. I'm more than certain that you will.

19. Us and the whole rest of the world
are protesting the dimsun. I wrote to our PM and told him that I was appalled that he was allowing Bushinto the country and that he should be arrested as a war criminal.

And honestly, most of us here don't believe that he was elected. Every time I hear on the news that the election is being questioned because of exit poll discrepancies I hope its the American election but they are always talking about the Ukraine. The funny thing is that the situations are so much the same and none of the news is making the comparison. Even CBC. Its so twilight zone.

Love the Nanaimo bar. My mum makes them this way but adds another layer of mint hard layering as well. Don't know how she does it, but... yum! She does use a bitter hard chocolate for the top then the mint.

23. protest details
There will be protests in Ottawa and Toronto (for the millions there who can't make it to Ottawa -- but there are same-day round-trip chartered buses taking many to Ottawa) -- I imagine Montrealers, being closer, will be more likely to travel, but there will likely be events there too. I can't say about BC ... but Salt Spring Island did have events in the run-up to the invasion. ;)

Ottawa's events are detailed here:

http://www.nowar-paix.ca/

(Frankly, I find those folks a little loopy, as in fringe, but the Ottawa event will be massively attended by unions and church groups and so on, as were the anti-invasion demos.)

Basically, a daytime protest and an evening vigil.

Other events are here:

http://www.acp-cpa.ca/en/NOTOBUSH.htm

Aha: http://www.acp-cpa.ca/en/NOBUSHCANADA.htm

Salmon Arm, Grand Forks, Vancouver and Victoria, BC, have their events lined up ... as do about 15 other places in addition to the ones mentioned in this post.

I was going to suggest a BARE YOUR BUMS FOR BOOSH! display, but I wouldn't want it to turn into a FREEZE YOUR BUMS FOR BOOSH! moment.

On the other hand, I STILL have this US$38.12 (I know, it's devaluating rapidly) that I'm willing to send to any country willing to just KEEP him. I've had no takers. Gee, I wonder why...

33. Have you noticed he is not making any real appearances in the US..
They do photo ops at Crawford that is it. It is very rare he gets close to the public anywhere in the world. Canada this is a very rare opportunity. I am wondering if this visit is going to drive him deeper in the bunkers.

Canada also needs to avoid renewing amnesty 2005 allowing him to visit Canada given his DUI conviction.

Maybe if Canada gives him a good enough reception he will cancel the inauguration ceremonies. Wishful thinking.

38. Exploiting the goodwill of the Canadian people for political gain
We have much to thank our Canadian neighbors for. There actions on and after 9/11 were exemplary. There was certainly risk involved in letting the plans enter Canadian air space. We needed them and they were whole heartedly there for us. I think that it is unfortunate that Bush would try to exploit the goodwill of the Canadian people for political gain.

I hope that it rains on his photo op.

Canada's help on 9/11 when he went on TV afterwards and thanked every one else....And now that he wants to look like he's friends with every one he is using this visit to belatedly thank us....It doesn't fool us no matter what kind of conciliatory words he uses (that someone else has written for him, of course.).....We were thanked by the Americans who were diverted to Canada and his words mean nothing anyway.....

46. any excuse to shield himself from criticism!
You can bet he's going to spin any expression of disapproval as "being ungrateful for his gratitude". It is NOT disrespecting Nova Scotians, to call attention to Bush's cynical exploitation of their goodwill -- remember, most Maritimers disapprove of his actions and wanted his opponent to win.

Bush fragmented the American public -- I'll be damned if he comes up here and tries his nasty little tricks on MY country! His little minions have been trying to sneak into Alberta (that new "Alliance" party has GOP tactical support). I suppose he found out that Nova Scotia has fossil fuel reserves ...
