Pol: Fed Owes $1.2B to Schools

The federal government has shortchanged the city's public schools by more than a billion dollars under the No Child Left Behind Act, Rep. Anthony Weiner said yesterday, adding that he regretted voting for the legislation.

The law, which President George W. Bush signed in 2001, promised the city $3.5 billion in school funding by next year, Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens) said at a news conference. The city is still waiting for $1.238 billion, which like the rest of the money is earmarked for students who are disabled or attend under-performing schools.

"I, for one, regret voting for it," Weiner said, outside a TriBeCa elementary school. "We have essentially been snookered by a promise that hasn't come true."

Weiner said his estimate of what the city is owed is based on funding allocated in the 2003 and 2004 federal budgets.
