Iraq Officials Seek Delay for Elections
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 08:57 PM by Iceburg
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Leading Iraqi politicians called Friday for a six-month delay in the Jan. 30 election because of the spiraling violence as U.S. forces uncovered more bodies in the northern city of Mosul, apparent victims of an intimidation campaign by insurgents against Iraq (news - web sites)'s fledgling security forces.

Asked about their demand for the election to be postponed, President George W. Bush (news - web sites), at his vacation home in Texas, said, "The Iraqi Election Commission has scheduled elections in January, and I would hope they'd go forward in January."

But the country's deputy prime minister told an audience Friday in Wales that sticking to the election timetable would be difficult because of the security crisis.

In 6 months the protests over the US elections should have diminished some ...

What have I said over and over again America ... "the Iraqis elections ain't goin' happen in January."

King George waited till the selection was over in Merika was over before dumping this late Friday news.

1. I would be very surprised
If elections went off in Jan. and have always believed it would be postponed. If I am wrong, I will eat egg (with the pancakes) in my face, but most analyses of this supports the idea of it being a wacky idea. If they DID choose to go ahead, I think we would see a lot of people slaughtered.

2. Listen up... I've been in the election planning and delivery business
all of my adult life. I spent 5 months in SA preparing for its first democratic election in 1994. While SA endured a violent entry into into democracy (over 2500 killed during that period)... it PALES in comparison to Iraq. In SA, we had over 1000 election planners working round the clock 4 months PRIOR to the election...last count I heard was Iraq had 35.

Trust me, the January date was for the American audiance only.

3. Is it at all fair to compare Iraq to SA?
I see your point, but this is hardly about an Iraqi entrance into democracy - it's about American imperialist planners installing an Iraqi power-elite, and putting on a show while they're at it.

4. 600 ING division wiped out in Fallujah
the 4th Division .

The Resistance attacks on US supply lines appear to be
yielding fruit now, as the amount of ammunition available to
US forces now seems to be less than ample, something that
is reminiscent of what happened during the first siege
of al-Fallujah in April 2004 where Resistance attacks on the
US supply lines cut off American forces’ supply of
ammunition and was one of the factors compelling the US
to agree to pull back.

When was the last film seen of US in Fallujah?

At about 3pm Iraqi Resistance forces bombarded the
US occupation headquarters in the Republican Palace
area - known to the invaders as the “green zone” - in
Baghdad with five Grad rockets. This barrage struck a
US ammunition dump and secondary explosions continued
until 9pm Thursday night. Fire was still burning in the
compound until the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent
submitted his report, posted at 11:30pm Mecca time (
12:30am Friday local time).
