Religious right backs Powell II
State Secretary's son becomes America's 'chief censor'
WASHINGTON - For the first four years of the first Bush administration, few Americans knew Michael Powell for anything other than being the son of Colin Powell, the U.S. Secretary of State.

Jerrold Nadler, a Democratic congressman from New York and ranking member of the House constitution subcommittee, says Powell's complaints against ABC and Monday Night Football "make it abundantly clear that he is less interested in doing his job than he is in becoming the country's chief censor."
But social conservatives, whose massive turnout in the Nov. 2 presidential election helped tip the scales in Bush's favour, are hailing Powell's anti-obscenity campaign as long overdue.

There is talk around Washington that Powell's crackdown is motivated more by possible designs on a future political career, and the need to have support from the social conservative base of the Republican party.
Powell, still in his early 40s, has said little about his political ambitions, but it is clear he wants to be known for more than just being Colin's kid.
