Terror Case Hinges on a Wobbly Key Player (Man who set fire to himself)
The transcripts by federal prosecutors depict a scene that could be out of a B-movie. In a German hotel room bugged by American agents, a Yemeni sheik was murmuring about jihad, a federal agent was posing as a former Black Panther eager to give millions to terrorists, and a roundish Yemeni man with a checkered past was egging on the others in his new role as one of the United States government's favorite - and best-paid - informers.

In time, the informer, Mohamed Alanssi, would come spectacularly undone. This month he set himself on fire outside the White House because of a tangled dispute with the F.B.I. His act, and the attention it has drawn to his strange story, have damaged what may be the biggest terrorism financing case in this country. He is, it turns out, a former American Embassy employee in Yemen who was fired twice and left his country with a warrant out for his arrest for his role in a financial dispute.

But in the cold Frankfurt winter of 2003, he played his role with antic precision. He nudged the conversation toward wild terrorism financing plans, even as the sheik, a cleric respected in Yemen for his fund-raising prowess, countered with generic, pale comments about feeding the Muslim poor.

In the talk of jihad and charity, the transcripts show, Mr. Alanssi worked to cast the sheik, Mohammed Ali Hassan al-Moayad, in a sinister role. And the sheik sometimes seemed to help the effort.

6. They were in danger before
The fact that the FBI wouldn't do anything about it was one of the reasons he did what he did, out of desperation.

4. Considering the US government hired him...
...it's no wonder he turned out like he did. I feel for the guy but alarms should have been going off long ago. Give me enough money and I can make Mother Theresa look like a Nazi.

5. ROFL....Christopher Hitchens did just that to Mother Theresa...how much
did they pay him?

I think this story is very odd. There's probably more there than was even apparent when the original post about "man sets himself on fire" first occurred. As with everything about the Bushes...scratch the surface and you see a trail.

So...does this mean the NYT's is going to persue this? Probably not once their "editors" get ahold of it and squash it after the "first" report.
