and easing into this announcement just a couple of days ago:
Bin Laden Not Hiding on Pakistan Border -Commander
Thu Nov 25, 2004 08:39 AM ET

By Zeeshan Haider
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden can not be hiding in Pakistan's tribal lands on the Afghan border as Pakistani forces have combed the area and found no hint of him, a Pakistani army commander said on Thursday.

Bin Laden and his bodyguards could not go undetected in the rugged tribal lands, although pockets of al Qaeda-backed fighters are battling Pakistani forces there, said Lieutenant-General Safdar Hussain.

"He requires his own protection and the kind of security apparatus he is supposed to have around would give us a very big signature," Hussain told Reuters in an interview in his well-fortified headquarters in the northwest city of Peshawar.

"There is not an inch of South Waziristan agency or the tribal area which we have not swept time and again and if he was here, I assure you he could not have escaped my ears and eyes."

Hussain is military chief of northwest Pakistan and heads a campaign to clear out al-Qaeda militants, most of whom took refuge in Pakistan's lawless border lands after U.S.-led forces captured the Tora Bora mountains in eastern Afghanistan in late 2001.

U.S. commanders hunting for bin Laden in Afghanistan say they can't find him there and he might be in Pakistan's tribal areas. Other reports suggest he may have taken refuge in disputed Kashmir but officials there say security is too tight for bin Laden to go unnoticed.

5. Like the Pakistani army EVER wanted to catch him...........sheesh.
Isn't the army in Pakistan largely made up of Fundi Shi'ites?

Isn't it at least POSSIBLE (if not actually probable) that they've been responsible for his elusiveness right from the start?

31. OBL is a Sunni
Bin Laden is exceptional in his ability to recruit from all over the Muslim world. The Sunni Muslim world, that is. Bin Laden and his allies follow a very strict Sunni Islam.

6. Perhaps this is the story
Pakistan withdraws troops from main town in Al-Qaeda hunt zone
(AFP)

27 November 2004

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has withdrawn soldiers from the main town in a tribal area near the mountainous Afghan border after months of bloody offensives against Al-Qaeda-linked militants, officials said on Saturday.

Military checkpoints in Wana, capital of troubled South Waziristan district, are being handed over to police after tribesmen pledged their territory would not be used for violence, military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said.

But soldiers are still-hunting insurgents in the rest of the tense region and the military said the scaling-down in Wana was largely a symbolic move to reward one of the area’s two dominant tribes, the Wazir, for their help.

“The Wazir tribesmen have given guarantees that no foreign militants will be given shelter in the area and they will not support any militant activity,” Sultan told AFP.

He's on the payroll. I'm sure since about 9.20.01, he's been swinging on hammock drinking fruity cocktails, with a dialysis machine and the cabana girl of his choice nearby.

In fact, I recall that shortly after 9/11 an interview with his doctor in Pakistan surfaced and he denied that Bin Laden had ever been on dialisis.
