Supreme Court to Hear Campaign Finance Law Case (McCain-Feingold)

Opponents, including Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican Party and state political parties, and the AFL-CIO labor federation, attacked the law for violating free-speech and other constitutional rights.

Lawyer Kenneth Starr, best known as the independent counsel who investigated President Bill Clinton, represents McConnell. The law "works nothing less than a fundamental reordering of our political processes," Starr said in a written brief.

Supporters, such as the congressional sponsors and the government's solicitor general, defended the law as an effort to get rid of public corruption created by the chase for money in politics.
