U.S. Says It Has Right to Report Iran Nuke Case to UN
VIENNA (Reuters) - The United States said Monday it had the right to unilaterally report Iran to the U.N. Security Council, which could impose economic sanctions, for what it sees as Iran's atom bomb plans.

It also warned any companies that helped Iran with what it said were weapons of mass destruction that it "will impose economic burdens on them and brand them as proliferators," the head of the U.S. delegation, Jackie Sanders, said in the written text of a speech to the U.N. atomic agency.

Quite apart from the question of how this board chooses to handle these matters ... the United States reserves all of its options with respect to Security Council consideration of the Iranian nuclear weapons program," said the head of the U.S. delegation to the IAEA, Jackie Sanders.

In the written text of a speech to a closed-door session of the IAEA board, Sanders said that under the U.N. charter any member of the U.N. could bring to the Security Council any situation that endangers "international peace and security."

"Despite these efforts, some companies, which we brand as serial proliferators, continue to sell materials that could advance Iran's WMD and missile programs," she said.

We want any proliferators, from multinational conglomerates to small exporters of dual-use machine tools, to understand that the U.S. will impose economic burdens on them, and brand them as proliferators," Sanders said.

Iran confirms 'final' uranium deal
From CNN Correspondent Kasra Naji
Monday, November 29, 2004 Posted: 10:55 AM EST (1555 GMT)

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Avoiding a date with the U.N. Security Council, Iran has reached an agreement with three European powers to fully suspend its uranium enrichment activities, Tehran's chief nuclear negotiatior said.<snip>

Crucially, and in line with Iranian demands, the resolution described the freeze as a voluntary, confidence-building measure and not a legally binding commitment, Reuters reported.

According to Moussavian, the IAEA will not seal 20 centrifuges that Iran had asked to be exempted from the suspension. Instead, the U.N. nuclear watchdog will use cameras to monitor the centrifuges.<snip>

13. LOL!
From the article:

The United States "will impose economic burdens on them and brand them as proliferators," she said.

Big deal. The rest of the world is leaving the U.S. in the dust when it comes to international trade deals.

9. Sounds like aggressive unilateralist speech to me.
No surprise there.

No matter how militarily superior we are,...the rest of the world is not going to tolerate this shit and I cannot imagine it will wait to act until after the neocons wage mass destruction. The world had to bear horrible consequences last time a power-wielding nation was "appeased". I seriously doubt the world is going to "appease" this power-wielding leadership.

12. Russia and China say they have the right to veto any U.S. resolutions
And don't think for a second they won't use it.

Especially since China has just signed a $7 billion contract to purchase oil and gas from Iran.

And Russia has economic ties to Iran also.

14. US is already backing off: White House Awaits Proof on Iran Promises
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration agreed Monday to hold off trying to punish Iran to give the country time to keep a promise to freeze all programs linked to enrichment of uranium, a key ingredient in a suspected nuclear weapons program.

"We will see, as time goes by, if they are now finally going to comply in full," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said in backing the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency's acceptance of Iran's latest pledge.

"Iran has time and time again deceived and denied, deceived the international community," McClellan said.

Even while going along with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the administration did not back away from its suspicions about Iran's activities and pledges.
