From Raging Grannies to belly dancers, peaceful Bush protests expected
OTTAWA (CP) - Masked bands of self-described anarchists appear at most major demonstrations, often clashing with police.

But such protesters will likely be drowned out Tuesday by a diverse throng of peaceniks as George W. Bush arrives for a two-day visit to Canada. Up to about 15,000 marchers are expected in Ottawa, and another 5,000 during his trip to Halifax on Wednesday. The only aggression openly sanctioned by rally organizers seems to be the possible "toppling" of a large papier mache likeness of the U.S. president.

The stunt would mimic images flashed around the world last year as American tanks rolled into Baghdad and U.S. soldiers helped pull down a statue of Saddam Hussein.
...
"You'll see the Raging Grannies in addition to radical cheerleaders, Belly Dancers Against Bush, (and) Artists Against War who have created an 'Unwelcome Mat.'

"It's going to be a breadth of opposition to the policies of the Bush administration."

4. I'm amazed at the "go easy on him" attitude...
...that seems to be prevalent over the last few days in the Canadian media. It seems to be a cross between abject pity for the guy, and "Careful, he's the world's most dangerous fucking retard..."

I think everybody's just burned out by the hatred in the world today. Everybody's tired, and there seems to be no stopping him anyway. That shouldn't be an excuse for complacency, IMHO...

6. Trying to make protesters look foolish "Raging Grannies to belly dancers"
Hey, I'm a "raging grannie" (or at least, I would be if there were any protests to join) but come on, this just makes protestors look silly. "Ha, look at these anti-Bush people, they're all so *colorful*. Buncha eccentric amusing loonies, nothing to see here, move on."

That's the way CNN made the NYC protesters look. They generally only showed the ones painted up or shirtless with mohawks, or fat and "ugly" (they considered ugly anyway), and people who looked like flakes. What I got watching every single second of the 4 1/2 hour protest on C-Span, was that 99% of the protesters were just plain Americans, normal people you wouldn't look twice at if you passed them on the street. I liked seeing the "colorful" ones, but they were only a small portion of the whole.

8. yes
media always tries to make out that protesters are freaks on the fringe, not people that 'ordinary' folk can identify with.
