More Striking Ormet Workers Arrested
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 07:19 PM by ohio_liberal
Just hours after 10 members of the United Steelworkers of America 5724 were released from jail, seven members of the USWA 5760 were arrested.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the workers who went to jail Monday were arrested for allegedly violating a court order. According to the Sheriff, the court order specifies that striking workers are not allowed to stop trucks from traveling into the plant.

Officers brought the six men and one woman to the jail around 2:00 p.m. Monday. However, members of the USWA 5760 say they don't believe their fellow strikers did anything wrong. Witnesses say the seven workers approached a truck trying to cross into Ormet and asked them to respect their picket line. They say the driver then turned around and left. The witnesses say that is when a number of police cars pulled up to the scene and arrested the workers.

Friday night, officers arrested ten people with the USWA 5724 for allegedly getting out of control on the picket line. Those ten workers were released from jail on their own recognizance just hours before the most recent arrests.

1. Union busting
via intimidation. Old as the hills. BTW, I ALWAYS respect a picket line. Usually I go up and sing Union songs with the strikers.

2. Union busting, big time
They're bringing in police from at least 3 counties to make arrests. The company is doing nasty little things as well, like refusing to direct-deposit the worker's paychecks and making them wait for them to come by mail.

3. I'm sorry.
I thought your post said "More stinking omelet workers arrested." Struck me as damn funny!

But now that I read the post... I feel like I could cry. F*uckin' Reagan. He caused the downfall of the union.

5. Here's an example of the local Repug paper's spin on this.
They say the union called the strike after the company refused to meet their demands. The truth is the company had the bankruptcy judge void their contract and is trying force more concessions on them.

6. ORMET SUCKS -- rotten hateful management

I'm so glad my husband retired--we still have the stress like this, but at least he doesn't have to go there and face the dehumanizing treatment that upper managment orders. Bastards, all of them.

11. my husband knows most of the 7 who got arrested yesterday
Terrible work atmosphere. When Boyle got his hands on down below, we saw the writing on the wall. We saw what happened when he got the reduction plant --concessions, threats, intimidation, safety issues. Last contract for them, I read letters in the Monroe Cty. Beacon from employees up there who were eligible for food stamps and the school lunch programs. My husband took an early retirement-the day he turned 55 was his last day there. Within months he looked 10 years younger.--he ran the 96 for a really long time.

I've been to Martin's Ferry a couple of times, downtown is very nice. After we moved to Marietta (15 yrs ago) we didn't travel up river very often.

10. Is there a relief fund?
Or should we just send donations directly to the local?

Frankly, I like to see more arrests. Then we see this for what it is: a war on unions.

Stand strong, brothers and sisters!
