Insurgents still a problem in Fallujah
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 03:38 PM by floda
short but telling..

FALLUJAH, Iraq Insurgents are still a problem for U-S Marines in
Fallujah.

Two weeks after Americans recaptured the city, Marine officers say insurgents are still mounting daily attacks against Marines and Iraqi troops. They're emerging from homes, tunnels and spider holes.

One Marine was killed and three were injured yesterday in an attack from a house that Marines thought had been cleared.

Marine officials say the insurgents are hoping to disrupt nationwide elections set for January 30th by establishing what they call "psychological dominance" over the population.

Officials say it's impossible for the Marines to maintain an airtight cordon around Fallujah.

2. When did 'foxholes' become 'spiderholes'?
Doesn't the military also have another delightful euphemism for them like 'Subterranean Personal Defensive Position'?

10. foxholes are different than "spider holes"
a 'foxhole' is basically just an open pit, with berms made from the extracted dirt...
a 'spiderhole' is usually hidden, possibly with some type of trap door or cover over it, as used by the 'trap-door spider'

3. a bit more at this link...bunch of excuses about their "success"
~snip~

On Monday, one Marine was killed and three were wounded in an attack from a house in Fallujah that the military thought had been cleared of insurgents.

"It's still a very dangerous environment," Wilson said of this city 40 miles west of Baghdad. "Just when you think you have an area cleared, someone comes out of a tunnel, a spider hole and starts shooting."
~snip~
The U.S. military considers the battle for Fallujah a success. But Marines continue to fight sporadic gunbattles with insurgents as they clear the streets, homes and buildings. More than 350 weapons caches have been found.

"It's a dense city, easy to conceal in and move about," Wilson said. "They move sometimes from buildings with ladders across rooftops

6. Will the US never stop this silly
"Mission Accomplished" bullshit?! If the US is going to fake victories in Iraq for the consumption of the blood-thirsty American public, why not fake the whole episode? Fake town, fake enemy, fake bombardment, then fake victory. At least then it wouldn't keep turning around on the assholes - "Uh, we won...uh, but now we have to win the same battle again. You know, this happened in Vietnam, too, so we shouldn't be surprised..." If people weren't being slaughtered in this mess, it would be damned funny, but...
