White House Proposes Cuts in Salmon Areas

By JEFF BARNARD, Associated Press Writer

GRANTS PASS, Ore. - The Bush administration Tuesday proposed large cuts in federally designated areas in the Northwest and California meant to aid the recovery of threatened or endangered salmon. Protection would focus instead on rivers where the fish now thrive.

The critical habitat designation originally included rivers accessible to salmon, even if no fish occupied them, and covered most of Washington, Oregon and California and parts of Idaho.

Under the federal plan, critical habitats would be cut by more than 80 percent in the Northwest and 50 percent in California — and more cuts might be ordered based on public comments over the next six months, said Bob Lohn, northwest regional administrator for NOAA Fisheries, the federal agency responsible for saving salmon from extinction.

<--snip-->

Both proposals were strongly opposed by environmentalists, Indian tribes and a commercial fishing group, which said the Bush administration was abandoning any hopes of restoring salmon beyond bare survival.

Destroy the earth. Leave no fish alive. After all, soylent green patties and wafers are far more economically efficient.

3. If These were Cows...
If the salmon were cows, the Boosh regime would be falling all over themselves to see to it that the hoofed salmon got federal protection.

This administration and its congressional allies is going to remembered as the most stupid and short-sighted administration since U.S. Grant's.

4. Bush literally sickens me in his
environmental policies. But then he is rich enough and elite enough that he has his pond in the backyard at Crawford stocked with fish and he fish's from his patio chair. He can't comprehend its not that way for the rest of us and that it isn't nature's way. His classic "let them eat cake".

6. I thought we could co-exist with the fish? . . .
I guess that's only possible if the fishies no longer exist . . .

9. this year only 22 Snake River sockeye salmon have made it.
"There is just little that we do know about sockeyes, because we have so few of them to work with and study," he said

The sockeye salmon run was once so plentiful that a
cannery was considered for Stanley. But instead a dam was
built by miners in 1910 – the only dam ever built on the
Salmon River.
