Bush Grateful for 'Five-Finger' Welcome

OTTAWA -- Thousands of demonstrators protested President Bush's visit Tuesday, but Bush, eager to patch up relations with the northern neighbor, said he felt he'd received a friendly welcome.

"I frankly felt like the reception we received on the way in from the airport was very warm and hospitable, and I want to thank the Canadian people who came out to wave -- with all five fingers," Bush said with a smile.

Prime Minister Paul Martin played along.

"I know what you mean, Mr. President," he told reporters at a joint news conference. "I mentioned to the press that was with us in Chile that I found that Spanish and English and French are three different languages but that sign language is universal."

However ... after it sits for a while in one's soul, one begins to hear it as a total discounting of the fact that people do not like him, that people do not like his policies, that people do not want war and that people think that the occupation and invasion of iraq is a bush crime aganst humanity.

On the face of it the "five finger" salue may have been cute ... on the depth of it, it was a sorry way for bush to discount the reality of so much that is not right and of so many who are against him...

it was a blatant disregard of opposition to him and his policies.

People like him because he can seem so nice and funny. What they seem to ignore is that his actions are not nice or funny at all. The only way to get people to see beyond his "witty??" one-liners is to educate them as to what lies behind the mask. Not an easy task to do without the help of network, cable or printed news, who only report on one side of his personality. Those of us who know what is behind the mask have a tough assignment. It's up to us to expose him and his malicious troop for what they are.
