LONDON (AP) - Prime Minister Tony Blair's government yesterday faced calls to explain why it had not told Equatorial Guinea of a suspected coup plot, despite learning details of the putsch attempt weeks in advance.
The government has confirmed that it received "confidential information" about the alleged plot in January, but was skeptical of the reports and did not pass them on.
Michael Ancram, foreign affairs spokesman for the main opposition Conservative Party, yesterday demanded to know exactly how much the government knew, and when.
He also called on ministers to reveal what actions they had taken to establish whether any Britons were involved in the alleged plot to overthrow the government of the oil-rich west African nation.
