Ex-KKK leader endorses Bustamante
<snip>
After refusing to disassociate himself from a Hispanic group critics say is as racist as the Ku Klux Klan, California gubernatorial candidate Cruz Bustamante has won an endorsement from the Klan itself.

California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante

CNSNews.com reports former Grand Wizard Tom Metzger of the California Klan announced his backing of the lieutenant governor in the upcoming recall election.

Metzger, who is also director of the White Aryan Resistance, applauds Bustamante for being a fellow "separatist" because of his past association with the Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan, or MEChA, while he was a student at Fresno State College in the 1970s.
</snip>

I believe this like I would believe Metzger would endorse Hillary for President. The whole MEChA thing has got them in a complete tizzy.

5. Bustamante should have denounced the slogan of that organization...
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 08:39 PM by leftyandproud
"For the race, everything. For those outside the race, nothing."

sounds like a KKK'er would like the group to me..gotta admit, this doesn't look good on him

18. That is not the slogan of MECHA
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 11:24 PM by disgruntella
There are several articles about this issue on the web site -- I recommend that folks take a look:
http://www.azteca.net/aztec/mecha/index.shtml

One article addresses this slogan in particular:
http://www.azteca.net/aztec/mecha/MechaFact-Myths.html

Myth #1 MEChA’s motto is: “Por La Raza Todo, Fuera de La Raza Nada!”
Fact: MEChA’s motto is: “La Union Hace La Fuerza”

(My Spanish is not good enough to translate that second statement -- any takers?)
(Edit: Translation is "Unity creates power")

In any case, I don't think the meaning of "La Raza" for Chicanos/Latinos is equivalent to the typical American's definition of "race."

And in any case, Metzger is full of crap.

23. thanks for that link pop goes the weasel
I loved it too. Had to send it out to all my friends. Hey I was in MECha in college too, and neither I nor Bustamante would support the KKK or the CCC. These triple single letter organizations are repuke fronts just like faux news.

Fox News - Fair and balanced - like O'Reilly's ass

3. Here's a good refutation of the whole MeCha non-issue-

Republicans who wish to push the argument that MEChA is racist might want to talk to Mike Madrid, an advisor to the GOP on Latino affairs (and someone for whom this meme is probably the biggest nightmare since Proposition 187), who had this to say in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle:

"It's bizarre to assume this is some kind of radical group, seeking to overthrow part of the United States," said Mike Madrid, who has worked on Latino affairs for the state Republican Party. "It was part of the Brown Beret and Chicano studies movement, but it's mainly a social group and has been for years. To suggest it's involved in paramilitary training or some underhanded conspiracy is ludicrous."

15. Exactly!
When I was an undergrad back in the 1980s, I had several friends who were MEChA members. Yes, we were all leftish, but as a group of friends, we were all races and both sexes and anything else you could toss in, and none of that ever mattered. To this day, when I find out that someone was in MEChA, this Anglo is predisposed to like them and expect to find a friend. It seems to me that the only people who would not know MEChA as a great group are people who generally don't know many Mexican Americans to begin with.

20. I went to MEChA meetings at my U
And I can't believe what a fuss some people are making of this organization. It is primarily a source of pride and empowerment for some students who otherwise would be sidelined in a system that does not value or recognize their culture for what it is: a vibrant, dynamic quilt of people, language and history. I saw nothing threatening about it and did not feel that I was looked down on for not being a descendent of Latin Americans.

4. Wow - what an important endorsement
What does that net, 6 votes? The Grand Wizard, his wife, his daughter, his grandson (his son) his mother and his "homophobe" best friend who will do anything for him and never, ever leave his side?

What a load of crap, this will merit no attention, regardless of intent.

9. World Net Daily? Jesus, Scaife is sticking his neck into California?
That evil POS sticks his tenticles anyplace there is evil to be done. It will be interesting just how much all of the Scaife.net can affect this bullshit recall.
The best result would be for Davis to stay in office, by a wide margin, and for Bustomante to win big in the meaningless popularity contest.

17. I think you may be missing the point here
I posted this because it is news because this is very obviously a "staged" endorsement. It demonstrates just how low the lunatic fringe right wing will go to get what they want. I've no doubt this Metzger did endorse Bustamante and I've no doubt he did it on purpose in order to maliciously tie the KKK to Bustamante. Do I think Metzger will vote for Bustamante? Hell no.

22.  Democrats need some street theator
We need to stage an endorsment of Arnold by our own Rovian fake group.

The greased-down, muscular leaders of the "Nazi's for Swartzenigger," make that "Nazi Weightlifters for Swartzenigger" should hold a pose-off out in San Fransisco.

With a little elbow grease, leather, goose-stepping, swastika waving, and perhaps some bad acting, a few DU members out there could manufacture quite an endorsement for Arnold.
