US senator (Norm Coleman) calls on Annan to quit
It is the first time a senior politician has called on the UN head to quit

1 December, 2004

A US senator has called on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to quit over alleged corruption in the oil-for-food programme in Iraq.

Norm Coleman alleges ex-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was allowed to profit from the UN-backed scheme and that Mr Annan is ultimately responsible.

The Republican senator is conducting a congressional probe of the allegations.

Correspondents say dissatisfaction with Mr Annan is rife among US Republicans, and is shared by the White House.

Maybe Sen Coleman should worry more about corruption and fraud in his own party, before he goes pointing fingers. Especially, considering he had to kill his opponent, in order to get elected.

Doesn't mean you have to justify or support corruption in the UN. I agree that someone should be held responsible at the UN and since Kofi is the boss, the buck stops with him.

Fair is fair.

Before you flame away at me, please note that I am also against the war in Iraq.

8. Has the UN's investigation concluded yet?
...sure, it may end up being a whitewash, but perhaps we should wait until we get the "official" word.

11. Oh, that whole trial first, verdict afterward thing again!
Didn't the USA PATRIOT Act repeal that? I mean, aren't allegations tantamount to a conviction? Except for Tom DeLay, of course.

9. Agreed...
We tend to forget that power and money tend to corrupt, even the institutions and organizations that we support, like the United States government. Eyes wide open. Z

12. True enough
No large organizations or governments are immune from corruption.

This particular scandal looks to be pretty incriminating and some heads should roll at the UN. In order for it to remain a respectful and functional organization, it also needs a clean up now and again.

10. As soon as you hold Bush and his cronies accountable
for all of their high crimes and misdemeanors, then I'll worry about Kofi Annan's offspring.

4. Only people other than repugs are "ultimately responsible."
But if you allow a terrorist attack,
if you start an immoral, illegal war without a plan for winning the peace,
if you allow and pay for corporate corruption,
if you allow a majority leader to act even if he should be indicted,

then it's everyone elses fault.

These jerks have no shame.
