Just say 'no' to $87 billion Iraq request
SEATTLE - A day after President Bush said he would ask Congress for $87 billion to pay for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, a majority of Western Washingtonians said Congress should say no.

President George W. Bush addressed the nation Sept. 7, 2003.
In an exclusive KING 5 News poll conducted by Survey USA Monday, an estimated 55 percent of people in the region said they think Congress should not authorize the money. Thirty six percent think it should.

3. Holy Joe will likely say $87 billion isn't enough to wage this just war
and he'll probably throw in a dig at Dean while he's at it.

4. Fax to my senators
The Honorable Patty Murray
United States Senate
173 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-4701
Fax: 202-224-0238

Dear Senator Murray,

When I was in Air Force ROTC in the 1980s, I was taught some important military doctrine. One of the points in this doctrine was a lesson learned from Vietnam: We can not fight a counterinsurgency war on behalf of another nation; only the people of that nation can fight a counterinsurgency war.

Due to repeated, unconscionable miscalculations on the part of Bush and his neo-con advisors, we are now in the position of fighting a counterinsurgency war on behalf of the Iraqi people. This effort is doomed to fail, and it is appalling to see how a crucial aspect of military doctrine has been so thoroughly forgotten.

If there has been a lull in the death rate of US soldiers in the last week (and this is highly questionable) it is because our troops are being withdrawn to hastily constructed fortifications. Our troops are surrounded.

Authorizing more funds for Bush to save face is throwing good money after bad. Bush's catastrophic invasion can not be rectified by further draining the already depleted US treasury. I urge you to oppose Bush's plea for more money to clean up his mess. We must eat crow and turn the entire Iraq reconstruction endeavor over to UN control. This is the only course that has a chance of succeeding.

Sincerely,

Me

I don't think we can walk away at this point. So, I wonder if they can allocate it in installments. say $20 billion every 3 months, and somebody (Rummy, Condi, or Powell) have to account for the money before more is authorized. What is it being spent on, what are the goals, are we achieving the goals.
Congress needs to exert some authority here and provide the damn oversight they should have provided in the first place.

If we can show that we are proceeding in a way that is consistent with international acceptance, then we will have a much better chance of getting help down the road. And if we continue our imperialistic ways, the money gets cut off, we pull out, and somebody else moves in.

edited due to faulty keyboard. :-)
