Va. Minister Cleared of Manslaughter, Convicted of Misdemeanor in Death of Daughter
HANOVER, Va. (AP) - A minister was convicted Wednesday of misdemeanor child neglect for leaving his 3-year-old daughter inside the family's sport utility vehicle for nearly eight hours, where she died of heatstroke.
"I'm still trying to figure out what happened that day," a sobbing Douglas W. Grote, 32, told the court.

Arlington County Circuit Judge Paul F. Sheridan acquitted Grote of the more serious charge - felony involuntary manslaughter - saying his actions in caring for his child were negligent that day, but not criminally malicious.

Grote remains free on bond and is tentatively scheduled to be sentenced in February. He faces up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
