Only captive Po'ouli dies in Hawaii.

MAUI, Hawaii, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The only captive Po'ouli, the world's most endangered bird species, has died in Hawaii, San Diego zoo officials said Wednesday.

The death of the male po'ouli at a bird conservation center on Maui comes less than three months after its capture, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The po'ouli is the size of a hummingbird. Its natural habitat has been ravaged by development and by feral pigs, goats, rats and the Indian mongoose.

Only two other po'ouli are known to exist, both in Maui's dense rain forest, the report said.

The Po`ouli has a brown top and a buff belly washed with brown. It also wears a black mask that is offset by a white throat. It has a short black bill and long pale legs. This forest bird usually measures around five and a half inches.
