DOWNTOWN TOLEDO -- The pink slips are flying in the city of Toledo. Dozens of workers got layoff notices Thursday in an effort to balance Toledo's budget, and avoid a nearly $17 million dollar deficit. Mayor Jack Ford calls the decision painful but necessary.

Here's the breakdown: 122 positions are being eliminated. 82 people will actually be laid off. They include fifty police officers and firefighters. The balance of the positions are being left vacant or shifted to non-general fund accounts. Workers will also have a chance to bid on other city positions.
