"Illinois Governor Puts Kibosh On Flavored Condoms"
http://www.nbc4.tv/irresistible/3964527/detail.html

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois' governor is pulling the plug on flavored and colored condoms. Gov. Rod Blagojevich is ordering the state public health department not to buy any more of the lively condoms.

A spokeswoman for the governor said Blagojevich feels the condoms are inappropriate because they encourage sexual activity.

But some health workers are disappointed by the decision. One outreach specialist, Dante Bryant, says the condoms in bright colors and flavors were able to catch the attention of young people.

"That's the generation we're trying to get because they're engaging in risky behavior," Bryant said.

We gotta educate him on this issue, folks.

Ideas???

42. Absolutely. WTF is wrong with him?
Who cares if people have sex? He's a Democrat, isn't he? I say anything to encourage condom use is alright by me. For every good thing he does, Blagojevich seems to follow-up with two bad ones. Asshole!

2. Does the Gov. have a latex fetish?
The idea of those little rubbery balloons being a factor in encouraging sexual desire in teens and twenty-somethings is, well, insane. Unless, of course, it's what the Gov. feels when he sees one.

61. Methinks he needs to take a few sex education courses himself.
People had better get past their guilt thingy (or whatever the hell it is) associated with sex. Otherwise, their kids or grandkids are gonna' be dying with HIV/AIDS.

Everybody poops and everybody has sex.

Our first life-saving objective should be to teach responsible sex.

25. Do they cost more?
The article doesn't mention that aspect of it...

In fact, that article really is a nice bit of work if you're really looking at it--it is written in a way that makes it look like he's taking away ALL condoms not just the fancy flavored ones with exciting disco colors.

Illinois is in a HUGE cash crunch, and several state agencies lack funding for the staffing to even DO the jobs they are supposed to. My guess is that spending cash on a bunch of "purty" condoms probably isn't real high on his high priority list right now.

If we are gonna cut corners, I have got to admit, that I'd place a higher priority making sure we had a lot of plain garden variety condoms rather than a few of the fancy ones...

Seems to me that the folks in Illinois are not terribly upset about this one. Maybe it is because we understand that he's cleaning up after the rat bastard GOPig who held office before Blag got here.

Perhaps we should read these moralistic right-wingnuts STD and HIV incidence data from state and local health departments-- showing that adolescents and the youngest of adults have the highest rates of acquiring infection!!!

Then again, these mental midgets would probably say that flavored condoms would only increase infection!

I wonder how many more young people will now become infected and die as a result of Blagojevich's uninformed, moralistic decision!

Evil, pure evil!

They're talking about rubbers!

Actually if these are ones provided to healthcare, I don't have a problem with that. Just like they shouldn't have the tampons with the fun colors and beanie propeller.

If you're getting them for free at the health department, you don't deserve flavors!

45. I could go along on the colored ones
but I know there is no way a girl (or boy) is going to use a regular condome when giving oral pleasure. They will continue to do it because a lot of kids think that it's not "sex" and that's it's safe. Flavored condoms would promote the use of condoms during oral sex and that's a good thing.

Where is it written that a governor's job is to ensure that the public receive free spearmint-flavored, flourescent-orange condoms? Blagojevich would look like an idiot if he let's such a ridiculous taxpayer-funded project to remain on the budget; the Republicans would otherwise have a field-day with it come next election.

73. If the government is going to spend money on condoms anyway...
then why should they be barred from buying the condoms people will actually use?

Isn't the WHOLE purpose to get people to use condoms?

As somebody who has had all varieties of sex both with and without condoms (I was sexually active in the 70s), I have to tell you that condoms are a hard sell. I use them because I've seen Karposi's Sarcoma up close and it isn't sexy whatsoever, but most of these kids have never seen a friend or lover die of HIV/AIDS. If flavored or colored or ribbed condoms give these kids more impetus to use condoms over the very thick bad-tasting GI-issue condoms, then doesn't it make sense to supply as many as might be wanted?

75. It's an awkward situation for any politician to be in
however much they might (or might not) personally value fancy condom distribution.

It makes political sense for Blagojevich to distance himself from this particular program. To be honest, I would probably do the same if I were in his shoes, though I wouldn't axe a free basic condom program by any means (which I know Blagojevich isn't doing, either).

In the meantime, somebody should instead invent a condom that doesn't feel as if a tournequet is being applied...

Um, did I land on the wrong website? He's the best governor Illinois has had in 50 years and people are dissing him for 1 small decision that they don't even understand!

Our local paper had a much better article on it. He doesn't want to encourage sex, he wants people to have safe sex. What was occuring was people were receiving the condoms and saying 'Hey this is cool, let's go find someone and use them' (or something like that). The condoms weren't encouraging safe sex, they were encouraging sex.

59. Is my brain broken? Because I don't understand:
"The condoms weren't encouraging safe sex, they were encouraging sex."

If people enjoy the condoms, they will use the condoms, therefore the condoms encourage safe sex.

If the state issues unappealing condoms, people are less likely to use them, and therefore at risk.

63. The people were purposefully seeking sex, just to use them.
In essence, people not planning on having sex were having sex just to use the 'cool' condoms.

Our local paper mentioned how there were only a few people who disagreed with the decision. (of course, they didn't give many details, but what paper ever does).

Somebody's got their "cause and effect" all fucked up here.

Lemme see, now...I go down to the Clinic to get some rubbers because I'm "feeling lucky". Now, they give me some of those Durex "Dr. Whoopee Collection" cocksocks, and I'm supposed to think "Hey! these are COOL! Find me somebody to love! Find me somebody to love! Anybody find me-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e.....Somebody to LOVEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"

Stupid.

Why do they think I wanted the rubbers in the FIRST place? to fill up with water and drop 'em on people from the roof?

If I'm getting rubbers, I'm sure as hell NOT planning on just parking them in my wallet till they rot.....

"Well, if you HAVE to do 'IT', the State has a responsibility to the Church to make the experience as unpleasant as possible...."

66. If they're more expensive, barring the state from paying for them is
fiscally sound but the opinion ruins the argument. He shoulda gone with, 'them things just cost too much!'

67. These are tax payer paid for condoms, folks. I don't see a problem with
this. If he were a repuke, he wouldn't be condoning the use of public funds for condoms at all..

72. Why not come out and say that then?
I think the most disturbing part of this for many of us is not that they were banned, but that he pandered to the religious right and used the old, tired "OMFG TEHY AR HAVING TEH SEX!!!!!!" argument.

74. No. The real reason he made a big show about banning these things
is because of possible (probable) GOP-sponsored ads when he's up for reelection:

"At this difficult time, as Illinois residents are concerned daily about jobs, education, and terrorism, Gov.Blagojevich is apparently more concerned about providing our children with vanilla-flavored, glow-in-the-dark condoms, paid for with your tax dollars..."

Somebody probably told Blagojevich about the fancy condom program, and he wisely (politically wisely) is distancing himself from it. It's either that, or be called "Gov.Condom" during the next campaign.

76. He's a FRAUD,
imposter, lying, sleazy, unethical little man with NO integrity! I've no doubt he has done this.

NEWS FLASH: I know from a reliable source, an aide to a state rep, the little jerk thinks he's going to do a run for the White House in 2012. Well, he can run but I have kept a very tidy file of how his office and the Department of Corrections in this crooked state work!

That little BASTARD, yes, I said BASTARD, has run roughshod over this state, has allowed the Illinois Department of Corrections to use and abuse loved ones and continue their shady ways unhindered, had a woman who has worked for the Department of Natural Resources in the Shawnee National Forest Wilderness Area for 28 years, "laid off", 3 years shy of her full pension time, has closed corrections facilities in SOUTHERN Illinois, and screwed the ones which brought him to office. Yet, the slimey bastard is allowing a multi-gazzillion dollar "country club" to be built in Southern Illinois to lure rich hunters, outdoorsmen, etc.

I voted for that creep...I have NEVER, in my life, voted for a Republican, but I am here to tell you, I WILL come next guber election here in Illinois.

Whew! end of rant :silly:

Jenn
