Troops wary of 'RPG Alley'

The Army's official label is Route Irish. But the soldiers call it "RPG Alley," a reference to rocket-propelled grenades and the frequency of attacks on the road between Baghdad and the international airport.

Attacks have become so frequent the U.S. Embassy ordered the road off-limits to American embassy personnel Thursday. The British Embassy issued a similar order earlier in the week.

The 7-mile stretch of road has become the most dangerous road in Iraq (news - web sites), despite 19 months and millions of dollars spent on security.

"It was an accumulation of incidents actually," not a single event, that led to the ban, says Robert Callahan, U.S. Embassy spokesman.

Repeated efforts to make the road safe have failed.
