N.M. Vote Recount May Cost $600,000
N.M. Vote Recount May Cost $600,000; Losing Candidates Liable for
Expenses

http://www.abqjournal.com/elex/266560elex12-03-04.htm

The Associated Press

Friday, December 3, 2004

SANTA FE— Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron says the requested
recount of presidential votes in New Mexico could cost upward of
$600,000.

The Green and Libertarian candidates who asked for the recount have
deposited $114,000 with the secretary of state to defray the per-
precinct and per-machine cost required under state law.

But Vigil-Giron said other projected expenses— including delivering
summonses to 8,000 poll workers, plus their mileage and pay— could
drive up the cost by at least $500,000.

The Greens and Libertarians "very reluctantly" decided Thursday to
withdraw their request for a recount in Nevada, citing cost as one of
the problems. The Nevada secretary of state said that tab would be
$346,207.

SANTA FE — Within the next couple of weeks, sheriff’s deputies will be
fanning out around New Mexico personally delivering notices to more
than 8,000 poll workers.

They’ll be summoned to county courthouses to determine once again the
outcome of the presidential race in a state where President Bush has
been declared the winner by nearly 6,000 votes.

Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik, who requested the
recount along with Green Party nominee David Cobb, said Wednesday that
while it wouldn’t result in a win for either third-party candidate, it
could determine whether votes were counted "completely and
accurately."

Badnarik said in light of a "clear bias" against third parties in
terms of ballot access and participation in debates, "I don’t think
it’s unreasonable to think there may be a bias in the counting."

2. They should make the manufacturers of the voting machine
at least pay for half of the recounts. It's their machines that can't add 1 + 1. Why should the citizens be forced to pay to find our who really won these elections.

3. Money wasted on recounts could be spent to buy more bombs.
Why this obsession with democracy at the expense of those things which are truly important?

6. Why is it the Greens and Libertarians?
I don't understand why it is these two groups requesting and paying for the New Mexico recount - it should be the Kerry campaign. I think there was plenty of excess money in the campaing coffers to pay for this.

7. The Kerry campaign doesnt want to look foolish
If they appear to drag out the election like 2000, it "could" come back to haunt them.
