NBC: Combat/Danger pay to be cut to all NOT in Iraq
No Link this was reported by the Today Show White House correspondent 7 AM.

She reported that sources (I can't remember if WH or Pentagon or the Hill) confirmed that forces in Afghanistan and elsewhere (Phillipines, Bosnia, etc.) who were receiving combat pay would at least see a reduction if not a full cut.

I'll try to find link.

5. military people don't use machines
they MAIL in their votes.

As far as I can tell. That was one of the issues I remember from the 2000 election was the postmarked military ballots that were done incorrectly.

23. Secure Electronic Registration and Voting Experiment (SERVE)

9. The Repubes also got e-mail addresses from the DoD
and that was before they siezed power!

There was apparently a meeting the day after the actual election (in Katherine Harris's side office no less) to discuss trying to find anyone who still had an absentee ballot. There is no evidence they actually did this but it was discussed.

Also Gore told his people not to fight ANY of the military absentee ballots no matter how badly they were messed up. This was a PR move to fight off the screams of "He doesn't want the military to vote!"

At the same time Baker told his people to fight EVERY military absentee ballot in counties that had voted for Gore. About 2/3 of them were not allowed to be counted. Support out troops huh?

10. LINK to Wash.Times article yesterday
http://www.washtimes.com/national/20030814-110411-2389r.htm

The Pentagon has urged Congress not to extend recent increases in "imminent danger pay" and "family separation allowances" to U.S. troops in war zones, citing the extra $225 monthly for the two pay categories.
The action has stirred anger among military families, veterans groups, congressional Democrats and even prompted an editorial attack in the Army Times, a weekly newspaper for military personnel and their families that is seldom so outspoken.
Imminent-danger pay, given to Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force members in combat zones, was raised to $225 from $150 a month in April. The family separation allowance, which goes to help military families pay rent, child care or other expenses while troops are away, was raised from $100 a month to $250.
The Pentagon's personnel chief, David Chu, yesterday told reporters that the outrage was misguided and that overall compensation for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan remains stable by giving them other forms of pay raises.

12. We pay the Iraqi military to sit home ...but we won't pay
our men and women who are in harm's way the danger pay they deserve???

Any veteran or active duty serviceperson who votes for * has to nuts...

I would gladly see the tax cut rolled back in order to see our service people compensated.

14. "Support the Troops" huh?
We got money for Haliburton to loot the oil, money to continue to illegally occupy Iraq, money for all the fat rich bush donors to get a fat tax-cut, but not enough money to pay our soldiers combat pay?

These greedy, hypocritical, oil pigs should be in jail. How could even the most freeping freep support these criminals?

15. Been there, done that, so here's what I think
1) Congress should never have temporarily approved danger-pay. You can't give it and then take it back. Just doesn't work that way.

2) I have no heartburn with them restricting danger pay to those in harm's way. I think it's fine to extend this to Navy guys out there covering the Army's buns but the guys in Incrlik (sp?) despite the GREAT job they're doing, shouldn't be authorized straight off the bat.

The problem is, danger pay creates "war-tourism", especially when high ranking officers have access to too many helicopters. You only need to spend a few hours in the official war-zone to pick up your danger pay for the month so it's not that hard for certain commanders from outside the zone to find official business (for just one day) for them and their entourage to buzz in, attend a stand-up, and then buzz right back out again. "Another good month" is what they'll say.

Been there, done that.

18. If it truly is a "War" on terror then the whole world is the battleground
Including America. I thought 9-11 was our new Pearl Harbor so that would mean America was ground zero on the war on terror. Any troops serving in America should get combat pay. Same goes for any troops serving anyplace on this earth. Bush* has made our troops targets and they should be compensated. I remember when I was in the service we had "overseas" pay also. I guess that is just for family people now.

21. 9/10/03 NBC reporting this morning that sources were wrong
Sorry.

The Today Show announced that the Pentagon is now saying that the sources cited yesterday were wrong. This is the second time in three weeks that they pump faked on this I think leaks are stopping them. But then I can't believe that they would really do that.
