Former police chief angry about 20/20

By Debra Thomsen
Boomerang Managing Editor

“Only three people know what really happened that night,” retired Laramie Police Chief Dave O’Malley said. “One of them is dead and the other two are known liars and convicted felons — murderers.”

O’Malley was a detective with the Laramie Police when 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered six years ago.

He was one of several people interviewed for ABC’s 20/20 that aired Nov. 26. He said that the interview and the way the show was ultimately put together has left him angry.

Now that Stossel gets plenty of time every week to push his ultra-rightwing pro-corporate crap, I don't need to listen to that shit.

27. They raped him cause they hated homos so much...
I wish the freepers would just come out, we would all be so much happier.

What they did to Matthew Shepard, both 20/20 and those boys, has insured all involved with a horrible afterlife.

May they rot for being so unloving and un-accepting.

where she started out...then left him high and dry at first opportunity.

John Stossel just creeps me out. ("give me a break" report on something of substance) Can understand why Walters got the hell out

I don't watch it either.

8. I agree and they and their advertisers should be boycotted en masse.
The only language these corporate shills for the right wing understand is that which is spoken in the vernacular of dollars and cents. Refusing to watch and refusing to subsidize their advertisers, along with clear explanations from each of us as to why we are boycotting is the only way to get through to them. Absent any backlash on the order of what Sinclair experienced, they will continue to pander to the right wing and distort reality to fit that agenda.

14. This is a truly depressing site...
Not only for the vast amount of GOP-heavy businesses that i've solicited, but at the sheer lopsidedness of their contributions in favor of the GOP. <sigh>

16. If it were that easy...
Aren't networks owned by corprations now?

What do they care, if we boycott advertisers? They'll still find a way to fund shovelling their shit down our throats. They got big fat tax cuts coming...

But you're right, we do NOT have to stand by and take this...

22. Yes and that is my point precisely.
Boycott the entirety of their programming. So long as they program this swill and lurch ever further to the right there is no reason to use their product i.e. their programming, in any capacity. If enough people did it, in a concerted fashion, as was done to Sinclair they would get the message. Tax cut or no they still need viewership to maintain their advertising cash flow.

At some point we have to do more about this than complain since they don't listen to our complaints. So we need to back up the complaints with tangible action and their revenue stream is their weak link.

7. He isn't the only one that was angered by 20/20's spin --
they tried to make the jerks that killed Matthew Shepherd look sympathetic and that the whole thing was just simple robbery gone bad, what a horrible accident~

15. Wasn't a robbery...he was frickin' CRUCIFIED
Robbery victims get knocked around a little...no, they knew exactly what they were doing to him...

And now they have their champion, in the form of 20/20.

What's the sound of some 50 million people turning the channel?

18. I know it was not the "simple robbery" that nasty Vargas woman
Edited on Fri Dec-03-04 06:43 PM by merh
tried to portray it as, don't get made at me.
Geezee - I know emotions are high but you know, blasting me isn't appreciated. You want to do something, then start blasting the bitch that was responsible for this segment.

As far as turning off the show, you can do that too or you can see what evil and twisted stories these rat bastards are airing and then WRITE THEIR advertisers and threaten boycotts of their products if they continue to advertise on these shows. Know what is being said or reported, then take action. (head in the sand doesn't work - or least it hasn't over the last 4 years) Look how effective freepers were with that St. Raygun movie on CBS, they threatened advertisers, they just didn't watch the show.

9. I see it as a concerted effort...
..to generally "de-victimize" gays - in other words: "There is no hate, no discrimination going on here, we're all good god-fearin' people - we just pass anti-gay laws to protect ourselves, not 'cause we hate gays. We don't hate anybody. Why, even when we kill 'em, its not out of hate or fear, its just an accident. They don't need "special rights" like protection of jobs or even their lives, no ones out to get them...things just happen."

17. yep. de-victimize Gays while victimizing those who hate Gays...
True story: My mother in law, who is now a fundamentalist was listening to some sort of Christian radio station in Missouri and they had the audacity to say that in Canada, if you say you're against gay marriage, you'll be put in jail. She took this as fact and we had an argument over it.

Again, they're not only trying to de-victimize the victims of hate and bigotry, but they're out to make themselves into damn martyrs for expressing their hate and bigotry. This way, when you tell them they're wrong or bigoted, then they can feel victimized. It's a vicious circle of ignorance.

19. The amount of dis-information is incredible
Every movement of hate needs a scapegoat, a focusing point to rally against. Then the "leaders" step in to "save" us from it.

Same pattern. Different hate.

24. Okay
just had to step in and let you all know that, as a 15 year resident of Laramie, Matthew wasn't murdered because he was gay. His "gayness" (I don't know the proper adjective) exacerbated the problem. I knew Matthew, I knew one of the perps, and the other worked for my brother-in-law. Wanna do some speed? Flame away.

I didn't watch 20/20, so I can only go by what's written here and the news story in the Laramie paper. What's your take on the story? Give us more information from your point of view.
