National Guard Hiring Recruiters(1,400 to stem thinning of the ranks)
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. Dec 4, 2004 — Increasing numbers of soldiers are deciding not to join the Army National Guard after they leave active duty, a trend so troubling that the Guard is hiring 1,400 more recruiters to reverse it.

The Guard's new recruiters plus its 2,700 already on the job will be aiming to get high schoolers and 20-somethings to sign up like they never have before.

In fiscal 2004, the Guard had expected 7,100 soldiers to sign up after active duty tours. Instead, only 2,900 did not even half. As a result, what's supposed to be a 350,000-member organization had just 342,918 soldiers when the year closed out on Sept. 30.

"If a soldier is near the end of their term of service and looking to stabilize their life, they know the likelihood is they're going to be deployed if they join the Guard," said Lt. Col. Mike Milord, spokesman for the Guard's headquarters in Arlington, Va.

Young Republicans support Iraq war, but not all are willing to join the fight

By Adam Smeltz

Knight Ridder Newspapers

NEW YORK - Young Republicans gathered here for their party's national convention are united in applauding the war in Iraq, supporting the U.S. troops there and calling the U.S. mission a noble cause.

But there's no such unanimity when they're asked a more personal question: Would you be willing to put on the uniform and go to fight in Iraq?

In more than a dozen interviews, Republicans in their teens and 20s offered a range of answers. Some have friends in the military in Iraq and are considering enlisting; others said they can better support the war by working politically in the United States; and still others said they think the military doesn't need them because the U.S. presence in Iraq is sufficient.

"Frankly, I want to be a politician. I'd like to survive to see that," said Vivian Lee, 17, a war supporter visiting the convention from Los Angeles,

Lee said she supports the war but would volunteer only if the United States faced a dire troop shortage or "if there's another Sept. 11."

3. Faith based groups/churches are sure to get tax payers aid
These kids will have church help to go to college and I will take bet on that. With the cut in Pell grants this should bring kids into NG but not for the people taking faith based money and that is up into the Millions now.Better start watching your tax money and just where it is going and that is it being giving out without going through congress. Time to pull money back into the states and local control, as to much Blue state money goes to Red states on top of this back hand way to dump money in to Bush's churches.

15. Yep, sure will
My husband will be deployed by then, one of the few remaining National Guard units left. If there are none left to deploy, where will they get all of their numbers from? Yep, a bit chilly outside, indeed.

8. exactly! and since it's just a phone call it's cheaper!
can use them video screens filled with flags a-waving, blarin' patriotic music, etc.

in fact we can probably get a few visas to staff the recruiting stations and it'll still be cheaper than using already military trained recruiters! think of the savings!

get a few who've seen action in Kashmir and have them glorify it, tah-dah, insta-recruit tool.

and the pentagon brass is just itching to go prove their armchair generalship! we gotta get these people on the ball, let them live their dreams! go, send them to iraq and afghanistan! they need, no they crave!, to go where the action is. who better than already experienced 'lifers'?

9. Why bother ?
lets have press gangs roaming the boonies, hoods, and barrios rounding up likly candidates. After all with freedom on the march, who wants to be out of step ?
After more people get blown or shot to pieces, sent home and burried, its going to be a bit of a challenge finding volunteers. I say just cut to the chase and round up and enlist whom ever we need for this war over oil.

10. They should hire DAV for recruiter jobs
We have 10,000 or so new disabled American veterans.
People who lost arms, legs, eyes, skin in our war.
Give these guys a hand, give them priority hiring as military recruiters.

13. In High School believe it or not...(1995-1999)
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 12:51 AM by NNguyenMD
we were never required to ever read the constitution in its entirety. Nor were we even asked to memorize or learn to hear the bill of rights. It seemed more focused on constutional theory, so we compared differing views of the constitution by historians like Charles Beard and Arthur M. Schlesinger.

So we pretty much did a fly overview of the articles of confederation and the constitution. But by that stage of American history I suppose it was assumed that you knew all the basics. Though, big picture theories on constitutionality, like strict constitutionalist, and loose constitutionalist, doesn't require you to remember the bit by bit details of the text of the constitution though.
