CHICAGO Sept. 9 —
Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon was in critical condition Tuesday following a massive stroke in a hotel room that left state officials preparing for the worst.

With the 73-year-old governor in a drug-induced coma and on a ventilator, doctors said Monday that the next day or two would be critical.

"This is up to Mother Nature and his own ability to bounce back, his own brain's ability to recover," said Dr. Hunt Batjer, chairman of neurological surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "There's no way anybody in this audience can predict it."

Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan assumed some of O'Bannon's duties but was not officially named acting governor. "I would just ask all Hoosiers to join hands and say a prayer," he said.

1. My prayers are with the Governor
his family, the Lt. Governor, and all touched by this situation (including all of us Hoosiers).

Thanks for the update.

3. We love you Frank and Judy
Hope all goes well. It's going to be tough mountain to climb but the O'Bannons have what it takes.

Doctors: O'Bannon Shows Signs of Brain Damage

A hospital spokesman says that a CAT scan shows that yesterday's surgery on Governor O'Bannon was successful. Northwestern Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Kelly Sullivan says that doctors have seen reflex movements that indicate brain damage, something that is normal in many stroke patients.

Sullivan says the CAT scan indicated that the surgery removed the blood that had built up on the governor's brain. She said his pupils were small, which is a positive sign.

The governor remains in critical condition Tuesday morning. O’Bannon is in a drug-induced coma as he recovers from three hours of surgery on both sides of his brain.

6. One very frightening thing is that even though
Gov. O'Bannon could not run again(term limits) his endorsement of another candidate would have carried substantial weight.

The main Repub candidate is Mitch Daniels of the Bush treasury department.

7. That role will now fall to Bayh
in terms of endorsing a primary candidate - in a way that carries weight. Bayh has direct ties to Andrews. I don't think he has many ties to Vi Simpson. Don't know how O'Bannon might have gone - he would have spent many more years working directly with Simpson through the state house.
