Gateway eliminating 650 jobs in Sioux Falls
ByJay Kirschenmann
Published: 9/03/03

"Gateway Inc. is eliminating 650 of the 950 jobs at its Sioux Falls plant as part of the work force reduction it announced last week.

EDIT

Gateway's North Sioux City plant will lose 100 of its 2,500 employees; 65 today and the rest over the next two months. The company's Kansas City plant is cutting 100 jobs effective today.

The company announced last week that it is closing its computer manufacturing plant in Hampton, Va., leaving 450 people out of work.

EDIT

The cuts are part of Gateway's long-range strategy to reduce its reliance on computer manufacturing and increase its use of third-party manufacturers to produce Gateway-branded personal electronics items such as digital televisions, and notebook computers."

2. 650 less SD voters who think the economy is getting strong
and who presumably don't think Bush is doing a good job. With SD being such a small state, this is not a totally insignificant number.

3. jobs
Are they getting rid of those jobs, or doing the new bush strategery
of farming it out overseas?

It's the American way!
No make that, the transnational corporate way!
Aren't you glad they are running the country?

4. Gateway
originally was in Sioux City, then left Iowa for the no tax state of South Dakota, along with a ton of economic inducements. This is the company right-wingers in Iowa point to when they want to lower taxes to nothing for low-wage companies to come to the state. They lost Gateway because of the taxes they say.

In reality Iowa could've had many a company if the so called leaders would've known how to do something other than pander to farmers. Robert Noyce, one of the founders of Intel wanted to start his company here. There are others as well.

7. I thought they were always
on the South Dakota side of the border.

Didn't they move some of their facilities to other places several years ago because it was getting very difficult to persuade people to pack up and move to Sioux Falls/Sioux City, which are not exactly high on most peoples' list of Preferred Places to Live?

8. No. They started in Iowa
and moved to South Dakota several years later in a heated enonomic development campaign by that state. This was shortly after a number of credit card firms moved offices to Sioux Falls.

5. 650 in Sioux falls is pretty substantial
That number will hit the community pretty hard, especially when it reverbs out. I don't think it's going to be a very merry christmas up there.

10. Is hazard pay included in the job description?
In slightly better news, at least Janklow's facing second-degree manslaughter charges. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 25th or 26th.

It's going to be really interesting to see what happens in this case - Janklow's case, I mean. It's fairly obvious what's going to happen to the people who work (for now) at Gateway.
