Soldier shoots friend, self

Johannesburg - A soldier, who recently returned from Burundi, shot dead a close friend and then committed suicide in Duduzu near Nigel at the weekend, East Rand police said on Monday.

The soldier, 28, and his friend Jubulani Mbele, also 28, were found with gunshot wounds to the head on Sunday afternoon, said police spokesperson Superintendent Andy Pieke.

Details on what exactly led to the shooting were still sketchy as a witness fled the scene soon afterwards, Pieke said.

The soldier's licensed firearm was found on the site.
