Cheney Said to Be at Taliban Risk in Kabul
Security for Vice President Dick Cheney has been ordered stepped up in Kabul on news the Taliban has plans to disrupt his visit, The Telegraph reports.

Cheney is scheduled to attend the inauguration of President Hamid Karzai Tuesday, along with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

A member of the Taliban council reportedly said the fundamentalist group did not intend to harm innocent people but it would attempt to disrupt the ceremony.

There are 18,000 U.S. troops in the country and some 8,000 NATO peacekeepers in Kabul and the north of the country.

14. "Disrupt the ceremony"? THOSE BASTARDS! nt
Its one thing to enslave a nation to fundamentalism, another to judicially murder, another to harbor Saddam, but disrespecting President Cheney! Kill them all, these colors don't run!

15. I think he may be more at risk from his diminishing cardiac capacity...
especially with all that flying he is doing. Someone posted a btw account in the paper about him apparently having to buy bigger size shoes--now a 10EEE, which may well suggest he is being treated for heart failure, and thus has swelling to the extremities. All that flying doesn't help... Given that he sat at every opportunity at nearly all his campaign appearances-- suggests to me that may be the case.

16. But Karzai said the Taliban was dead….
And Rummy stood right there and nodded….
I’ve lost track of the missions UNaccomplished….

http://www.dod.mil/news/Feb2004/n02272004_200402272.html

KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 27, 2004 – The Taliban is dead as a movement or a military factor in Afghanistan, the country's president said here Feb. 26, and former Taliban leaders seeking to return home will be allowed back if they don't have criminal records.
President Hamid Karzai held a joint news conference with U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld after they met in Afghanistan's presidential palace. He challenged the implications of a question posed by a correspondent from the Arab satellite television network al Jazeera that implied al Qaeda and the Taliban were becoming increasingly active in the country.

17. I think they just want to make him sound brave
Sure he is at risk in Kabul. As someone pointed out, what American wouldn't be? By the way, I was glad to see that The Telegraph lost the libel suit that British MP Galloway brought against it, which I believe cost them some 300,000 dollars. The Telegraph may be a little more careful about its reporting practices for a while.
