BAGHDAD (AFP) - The preliminary hearing of a US soldier accused of murdering an unarmed Iraqi civilian began at a US base in Baghdad, the first step towards a court martial.
Specialist Brent May is accused of the premeditated murder of an unarmed Iraqi man in the capital's Sadr City district earlier this year.
Three of five soldiers who testified Monday took part in searches of several houses in the Baghdad slum neighbourhood on August 28, during which May, 22, allegedly shot dead the Iraqi, who was in a room with a woman and three children.
May's statement said that his commanding officer had ordered him to shoot the man.
