France to Punish Police for Bungled Bomb Exercise

PARIS (Reuters) - France's police minister vowed on Monday to punish officers who planted explosives in an unwitting plane passenger's luggage to test their sniffer dogs but then lost the "bomb," which remains missing after a three-day hunt.

Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin condemned the "totally reprehensible and scandalous" incident and said the individuals responsible would be punished.

"I have decided to carry out an inquiry to find out in what conditions this exercise was carried out. It's obvious that appropriate sanctions will be taken," he said after a ceremony marking the appointment of the new Paris police chief.
