Driver Runs Over Teens After Ball Hits SUV
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) -- A woman ran over two teenage brothers after they accidentally hit her sport utility vehicle with a golf ball they were bouncing in a parking lot, officials said. One of the boys suffered life-threatening injuries.

The 14- and 16-year-old boys were bouncing the golf ball in a shopping center parking lot Sunday afternoon when it went astray and struck the SUV driven by 47-year-old Kathy Feaganes Allen, sheriff's Deputy Greg Suchy said.

No damage was done, and the boys apologized and began to walk away, Suchy said. Allen started to drive away, but suddenly made a U-turn, ran over a median and struck the teens before knocking over a light pole, Suchy said.

She then allegedly went after a third brother, but did not hit him. A witness said that after the SUV came to rest, Allen got out of the car and smoked a cigarette with the boys lying on the ground in pain.

Not some little low security pristine place, but a maximum security place where she is definitely in the minority. Line her room with the pictures of those three boys. She might want to die in the hell she created. Who needs the state then?

If those kids die I think she too deserves to die. I think the lives of several innocent people are > her life.

29. As a long time resident of this area, I'm willing to lay odds that this
woman is a recent addition to St. Johns County. This used to be a really nice laid back community.

It's the same old story. Too many people being crammed into what used to be paradise and the boarderline psychotics cross over the line and commit horrible crimes that destructively change the lives of far too many people.

When I saw the dateline on your article, I immediately went to the St. Augustine Record website. I am horrified by this woman's wanton disregard for the lives of these children.

The one thing I can promise you is that the people of this area generally have good hearts and open hands when it comes to helping those who have been struck by tragedy.

Isiah Grayer and his family have a long hard road ahead of them. I believe the community will help them along in any way they can.

I think it was Jeaneane Garafilo (I know I butchered the spelling of her name), but I think it was her anyway who was making the point that the brawling at sports games and the hate crimes and crimes such as this were due to this administration. I agree with her because I think people are all stressed out with all the hate on tv, and dirty politics and craziness we are exposed to every day. News stories don't make sense, facts are changed at will ... I think the anger of this nation is a direct result of this ugly administration. Like this lady, she sounds as though she thinks she is more important that some kids and she has the right to do things like this. I am beginning to think that some of these republicans actually do think this. And no remorse. The only remorse she will feel is when she has to stand before a judge, not cuz of these kids.

coupled with the premeditation of the crime--after all, she initially drove away, then made a U-turn and purposely ran 2 of the teens dow and went looking for the 3rd one--should be grounds for no plea bargaining, no pleading insanity, having the maximum sentence handed down to her and no parole ever.

The boys had already apologized when no damage was discovered on her car--so what reason did she have to turn her suv around and run them down? Revenge? Revenge for what? For not having a legal leg to stand on to go after them. She isn't crazy--she was on a power trip... She couldn't get them for damaging her car, but she was going to get them because she had no power to impact their lives for coming into contact with her car.

The douche bag was just supporting the troops by trying to kill children. The children who accidentally knocked a fucking gulf ball into her SUV.

The SUV is important to all the G-d fearing bushie types. Best of all, the SUV burns a lot of fossil fuel, which means we need to send even MORE troops (she is supporting them!) off to Iraq or maybe even IRAN to make sure she gets that precious oil!!! So what if it is under Iraqi or Iranian soil. It's hers. And, she will support the troops all the way by running over children and displaying stupid yellow ribbons!

Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 04:25 AM by neweurope
I'm not an American so maybe you feel that this is none of my business. But I have been reading DU for a long time now and always feel that the US all in all is some bloodthirsty country.

When we read about the torture in Iraq I asked a friend, a former officer, if something like that couldn't possibly happen with our Army, too. After all: People will be people. He said it was unlikely, and the US after all had a history of violence. Prisoners with shackles, death penalty - a country that treats it's own citizens like that is very much more likely to torture others. I agree with him.

I do not think that the death penalty - which is discussed over here too everytime a child is killed - is a solution to anything. When punishing one should be ruled by one's brain and not by one's belly. If you can't give life you don't have the right to take life away. Mistakes happen, and above all:

Violence birthes violence.

Peace to all of you :)

You're spot-on in regards to the death penalty. Myself, a US citizen for 39 years, and younger brother to two NYS corrections officers, I've never supported the death penalty in any case. It's not been proven to be a deterrent, and the only purpose it serves is to feed the vengeance mechanisms of those who crave it.

Peace to you too, my friend! :hi:

98. It's my understanding that the death penalty, though not practiced,
recieves support in public opinion polls. For instance,

Related to the unsafe feelings can be the attitude towards death penalty. In all researched countries, an absolute majority of respondents do think that death penalty should exists in their country. This group is biggest in Russia (78,7%) and smallest in the Czech Republic (56,1%). On the other side, Hungary has the biggest group of death penalty opponents (31,5%), while this group is the smallest in Lithuania (15%). Worthwhile to note is the high percentage of Czech respondents (over 20%) with no opinion on the death penalty.

http://www.ceorg-europe.org/research/2002_06.html

I agree with you, neweurope, that the death penalty solves nothing. But I am not surprised that many support it. I think the difference between Europe and the US has more to do with populism and demagoguery in US politics than any fundamental character traits.

As an outsider I report the impression others get from your country, no more. Of course I'm not speaking of fundamental character traits.

As I said: Death penalty is discussed over here every time something happens to a child. The beast in us wants revenge; simple people want simple answers, that's the same everywhere; populist politicians take advantage of that.

It just seems to me that you have a hell of a lot more populist politicians than other countries - and not only since Bush. Violent movies, violent books, violent video games - all of that unfortunately more and more is being read and watched and played over here, too - but in almost all cases they have been made in the US.

I'm very glad that over here the door that opens on that dangerous land has not yet been opened. However I suspect it won't stay shut forever - after all we have always been very good followers of our US-Big Brother *sigh*

WTF. That is all I can say. On another note, not everyone who owns an SUV voted for * and not all SUV's w/ ribbons are * voters. Some of us require them where we live, this includes myself. My boss has a big fat SUV, w/ ribbon. Her son is in kuwait, she voted for Kerry. I understand that many SUV owners voted for *. But not all of us. And not all of us are crazy like the woman in this story. If they could make an affordable SUV, that didn't use as much gas, was better for the enviornment, I would buy it. I buy my vehicles used, and through private sales, but I wouldn't be able to get out of my driveway thismorning w/o my SUV. 109. I must agree with you
I was about to make my obligatory not-all-SUV-owners-are-bad post but you beat me to it. My mom has a Mercedes SUV because she used to have to drive a whole bunch of kids and equipment around and it's easier to do that in one big 23 mpg vehicle than in two separate cars. She also happens to be the sweetest left-winger you'll ever meet.

115. Yes, I have an SUV and a ribbon and I am NOT a Bushie
I drive an SUV b/c I live on a mountain that gets bad weather and I have to haul things for my business. I have a yellow ribbon because I have friends and family of friends serving in Iraq and I recognize that they don't all want to be there. My SUV is almost 7 years old and paid for, it's not a money or image thing. And If I could afford a hybrid car and get what I need out of it, I'd buy one in a second.

141. Well, this woman lives in Flori-DUH...
...where the only real reason you'd need a big-ass SUV is vanity, pure and simple. A minivan would do nicely down there if you had to haul anything, and my guess is, she drives alone.

We live in the Lake Effect Zone, too, and my other half drives a Subaru Forester. Incidentally, I only beat her for most times stuck in the snow by one, but she just got it last year. ;-)

138. Fair enough. Good point - and welcome to DU!
This needs to be said, and heard. Especially for me. Unfortunately, I live in west L.A., where there are lots of affluent moms who cruise around all over town all day in their big-ass honkin' SUVs, and it's really for no other reason than status. Yes, I KNOW some of 'em go to the mountains a lot. Some of 'em have bunches of kids and carpools and sports equipment and other crap to haul around with those kids, but many others do not. For far too many around my area (no snow, nice weather, not a lot of wild, windy roads except through Topanga and Malibu Canyon and such - and howtheheck anybody could squeeze through some of those in an SUV is beyone me!) it's simply vanity. Because they CAN.

I understand if there's a reasonable or legitimate need for it. But the having it just for the sake of having it, or so you can be bigger than the other guy on the road (nothing more foolish-looking than some little blonde trophy wife jumping down from her high-chair on wheels with the "w04" sticker on it, in the grocery store parking lot in Suburbia Heights) is no reason. Particularly with Peak Oil breathing down our necks. I have to haul kids and sports equipment and other junk around all the time, and I have a regular car-type car.

Anyway, I'm glad you weighed in. Because it's encouraging to hear that some people who drive SUVs do so for understandable reasons, and aren't all knuckledraggers.

107. Short, updated story.....
According to St. John's County sheriff's Deputy Greg Suchy, Isiah Grayer, 14, and his 16-year-old twin stepbrothers, Justin and Jamel Marshman, were bouncing the golf ball in a shopping center parking lot Sunday afternoon when it went astray and struck a sport utility vehicle driven by Kathy Feaganes Allen, 47.

Suchy said no damage was done, and the boys apologized and began to walk away. He says Allen started to drive away, but suddenly made a U-turn, ran over a median and hit Grayer, causing severe injuries, and then hit Justin Marshman.

"I tried to run. I blacked out. I woke up bleeding," Justin Marshman told The Florida Times-Union.

Police say she then went after Jamel - who broke into a run and managed to avoid being hit as the SUV crossed two medians, struck a utility pole and stalled out in a ditch.

Witness Russell McPhee said Allen accelerated to hit the boys.

"She charged them," he said. "This was the most deliberate act."

"Thank God for the light post," McPhee told CBS News Affiliate WTEV-TV, "because that saved the third boy."

McPhee said he yelled at Allen to stay where she was when she got out of her car.

"After she ran them down, she got out of the car and lit a cigarette like a movie star," he said. "She watched all three of (the boys) just lying there."

Allen then borrowed a cell phone from a bystander - Terry Gerspch - to call her husband. Gerspch says Allen seemed unfazed.

"She was as calm as anything," she said. "She said the boys were throwing rocks at her car."

McPhee said Jamel, the uninjured brother, ran over to Allen's car and confronted her: "He just kept asking 'Why? Why did you do this?'"

You'd think things JUST HAVE TO GET BETTER! Yet, Bush hasn't even begun his 2nd term (our second 4-yr. season in hell).

Concerning the death penalty in Florida, is 2nd to Texas in dead deathrow prisoners. Don't forget Florida "law and order" celebrants' favorite toy: Old Sparky, the electric chair which was discovered to cause fire to flare up from the faces and heads of the guests of honor.

155. she's a bold-faced, racist liar
Why did she call her husband instead of calling the police--if these boys were truly throwing rocks at her suv as she claims? I mean, if I encountered someone who was intentionally defacing my car with rocks, I would call the police with a description of the offenders... I would have gone inside the store to alert store security so they could call police. I wouldn't have turned my car around and run them down.

She's a liar..

I don't believe for one minute she has verifiable mental problems... she's trying to set things up for an insanity plea and it should be blocked by the judge.

126. Update on the same AP story.......
It's the same story carried in the original post, and the Miami Herald, etc., only most of these sources opted to NOT PRINT the rest of it:
Grayer was in critical condition Monday at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, where his family said the boy had slipped into a coma. Justin Marshman was released from Flagler Hospital after being treated for a skull fracture.

Justin Marshman said he visited Grayer in the hospital Monday.

"There were all these tubes in his body," he said. "He was scraped up. His eyes, you can tell he was crying. All these stitches on his head. His leg was shaking. They say he can hear us, but he can't respond."

The boys' mother, Aribella Pearson, described her youngest son as an honor roll student in the seventh grade at Sebastian Middle School, who loved to dance and play sports in the neighborhood.

"It's like a horrible nightmare I can't wake up from," she said.

Makes you wonder why they are omitting the information about how injured one of the boys actually is! What's that about? This changes the tone of the story CONSIDERABLY.

130. Absolutely premeditated attempted murder...From the story:

"Allen started to drive away, but suddenly made a U-turn, ran over a median and struck the teens before knocking over a light pole, Suchy said."

She was leaving the area, which would have ended the situation. But she turned around, ran over the median-which indicates intent- and struch the kids. This means that she decided that what they did justified their death. Premeditation.

137. Maybe SUV purchasers should get a background check and..
a special "potential weapon" ownership permit.

In all fairness, I have experienced many very courteous SUV drivers, but I've also been bullied others.

They're dangerous even when they are parked. There is no visibility when trying to pull out of a parking space or side street when they are next to you.

A fair logic might be "Not all SUV and Hummer drivers are bullies, but bullies tend to buy SUVs and Hummers."

1. Paranoid schizophrenia
2. under psychiatric care every 3 months
3. taking 6 different meds "to keep her calm"
