Worker Stabbed Inside Agriculture Department
Associated Press
Tuesday, December 7, 2004; 12:35 PM

There has been a stabbing inside one of the Department of Agriculture's buildings in downtown Washington.

Department spokeswoman Julie Quick said the stabbing occurred in what is called the South Building, along the Mall, near the Smithsonian museums.

"Injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening. The employee was taken to the hospital and the situation is now being investigated," said Quick.

The unidentified victim was a contract employee, but it was not immediately known what job they were doing.

4. We know the victim was a contract employee. Was the perpetrator
a government employee?

6. Well
I've heard of this happening before, it happened to a co-worker of mine who was a contractor at Fort Belvoir, which is a military base in Northern Virginia. In rare cases people just go "postal" I guess.

They usually scan your stuff so you can't take a gun into these buildings, but a pocket knife wouldn't raise an eyebrow.

11. I work in a DC area gov building and employees are not scanned
All individuals with badges are not required to go through metal detectors. This would include contractors. Actually, one day my coworker forgot his badge and had to put his bag through the xray machine, he had a 6 inch knife (for a birthday cake) in there. The guards(who are also contractors) said nothing.
