Blunt Says Missouri Has No Authority To Force Workers To Pay Fees
9/9/2003 3:36:44 PM

(Jefferson City-AP) -- Secretary of State Matt Blunt says the state has no authority to force some new state employees to pay union dues -- or have special fees deducted from their paychecks as a condition of employment.

The Republican leader today sent a letter to the Office of Administration, noting that state law authorizes unions to deduct so-called service fees only from members.

Union service fees were not allowed in Missouri until Governor Holden -- a Democrat -- expanded union bargaining powers in a June 2001 executive order.

The fees have been criticized by business groups and Statehouse Republicans, who for years had blocked legislative efforts to grant collective bargaining powers to public employees. (sni/...)

1. once again repukes try to promote
some notion of an ''oppressive'' union lurking out there taking something from them.
people benefit from strong unions whether they belong or not.
if a union negotiates a better benefits package and those aren't members benefit -- then some small help supporting the orgainization that does the negotiating on behalf of all the workers is reasonable.
