Retiring Senator Plans Camping Gear Line

DENVER (AP) - U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell plans to help design a line of camping and outdoor gear that will bear his name after he leaves office next month.

The 71-year-old Republican will also continue his jewelry design business and is planning to speak at colleges and universities.

Campbell, the only American Indian in the Senate, has also interviewed with law firms that do business with American Indian tribes.

Campbell said Monday he has reached a tentative agreement with an unidentified company to make tents, backpacks and other gear for a ``Nighthorse'' signature line.

Campbell has also worked as a rancher, horse trainer and teacher. He was first elected to the Senate as a Democrat in 1992 and became a Republican in 1995.
