Top US Army general calls Iraq war an opportunity for US forces

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20041208/pl_afp/us_military_iraq_041208002453

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Iraq (news - web sites) war is a test of wills from which the US Army will grow stronger as it seeks to transform itself into a 21st century fighting force, a top army general said.

General Peter Schoomaker, army chief of staff, refused however to guarantee that the US military would successfully defeat the ongoing insurgency and pave the way for a democratic Iraqi government to take power

He also noted that several army units increased their re-enlistment rates after being deployed to Iraq, mirroring previous statistics released by the Pentagon showing the army would meet both its recruiting and retention goals this year.

"We have got extraordinary soldiers that understand what they're in the army for," he said.

On Edit: This War Criminal drops LSD regularly.

2. about those increased re-enlistments
could it be because many were basically blackmailed into reenlisting? My husband was, as were many of his friends, and he has a whole two years left on his contract! It was either reenlist or go back to Iraq ASAP plus no promotions for the remainder of the contract. Plus, they were offering some hefty bonuses if you did reenlist.

Funny thing with him... his paperwork was messed up and he still hasn't signed it. He's trying to become a recruiter before that happens and then he can't be sent to Iraq for not reenlisting or extending.
