Lawmakers welcome extensions for guard, reserve troops in Iraq (Zell/Saxby
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 04:52 PM by khephra
Senior lawmakers on a key US Senate committee on Tuesday supported a Pentagon decision to extend the tours of duty for thousands of National Guard and Army Reserve troops currently serving in Iraq.

The US Army announced Tuesday it would extend the current 12-month mobilization of Army Reserve by between three to six months.

"It means our Reserve forces will be mobilized longer than initially planned, but we believe this is a measured and responsible decision by the army and a decision that will contribute directly to improving stability in Iraq," said US senators Zell Miller and Saxby Chambliss, co-chairs of the Senate's Reserve Caucus, in a statement.

1. Two conservative Georgians. Nice.
Miller's a traitorous DINO. And Chambliss... well, there's a special place in Hell reserved for what he did to Max Cleland.

9. I Say the Draft, With a Few added Extras
At least the draft would be a catalyst to get some of the sheep off of
their asses, and do something.

It's real easy to nod your head, when no one in your family is in danger, but it's a whole new feeling when you get that visit from
the casualty assistance office. Then it's not so pleasant.

Add to that, the fact that some of these Guardsmen and Reservist will
most likely be on the losing end both personally and financially.

Some will lose their businesses, some their families, and others might
lose their jobs, providing their jobs haven't been sent overseas by the time they get back.

I think the draft would definitely be the downfall of this administration as well as some of the as kissing DINOS and the Rethugs.

All they would have to do is to allow no deferments for education, or paternity. The only deferments for military service would be for physical and mental problems. With ceritfication being required by US military medical personnel.

Those with physical problems would be required to participate in a public works program for 2 years, within the limits of their physical
handicap. They would be provided with room and board, just like their
military counterparts. After successful completion of their service they could continue on with their lives.

Those with mental problems would be subjected to a very thorough examination before being given a deferment.

All others would be required to serve actively in the military for at
least 2 years. This way everyone gets a chance.

11. I like Your Plan On The Draft
It would be the fastest way to end the war and bring our troops home. If rich rethugs kids had to go and fight, war over now.

13. Nice fantasy, now here's a dose of reality
The only deferments for military service would be for physical and mental problems. With ceritfication being required by US military medical personnel.

Money & political connections will still buy your way out of this one. Do you think military medical personnal are immune to pressure from political sources? You don't think that young Army Dr. performing physicals doesn't realize what a connection to the bush family means to his future?

Those with physical problems would be required to participate in a public works program for 2 years

You mean like Bill O'Reilly being a teacher for two years to avoid being drafted during Vietnam? You don't think most of the Bush and Kennedy kids wouldn't wind up doing some sort of cushy community service close enough to home to sleep in their own beds, while my two sons sweat it out in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Liberia?

All others would be required to serve actively in the military for at least 2 years. This way everyone gets a chance.

You've abviously never been in the military; just what do you think everybody's gonna get a chance at? Do you think for a moment that I, a poor white boy, high school dropout, had a chance at that cushy journalist job that rich, white, Senator's son, Al Gore had? Do you think he had an equal chance of ending up in the bush next to the DMZ sharing rations with me? BWAHAHAHAHAHA

In 1968 Bush jr leaped over a one year waiting list to get into the Texas Air National Guard, and get a safe, cushy job, flying an obsolete jet that would insure that he never got posted anywhere overseas. Do you honestly think there is anyway in hell you can legislate that kind of cronyism and favoritism out of existence?

I am so fucking sick of people advocating a draft who don't seem to have clue as to how the real world works. I have two teenage sons. I know for a fact that if your asinine idea was approved, my sons would get drafted, and Jeb Bush's boys would have nice, safe, cushy jobs, close to home, and away from all danger.

6. "A measured and responsible decision"
That will keep us from having to institute a draft within the next couple of months that would surely doom our chances for re-election. And after all, it's not like it's my kid who's broiling in the desert over there, so what's the big deal? They signed up for this, after all. By the way, does that pay raise I voted myself kick in this month, or next month?

Burn in hell, Zell and Saxby! :hi:

7. I'm sure they do welcome it.
but not enough to make sure they get their full health benefits...and I'm fighting with Tri-Care and the military right now to get the NG their entitled benefits-which include coverage to family members and is being denied. ...and for some, Tri-Care would be their ONLY means of health coverage.

but not enough to not close down needed services on post "in an effort to better support the troops".... and if they would only explain to me how closing needed services helps the soldiers...when a soldier's family suffers, the soldier's morale suffers.

but not enough to allow Reservists and NG unlimited use of the commissary-they are held to 24 visits a year or twice a month...and this is STILL in place even with activation.

but not enough to keep wounded soldiers in the military until a full and proper recovery...they are chaptering them out on medical as fast as they can.

...and the list goes on and on...

12. I think our "lawmakers" need to be sent over there to patrol...
...the streets of Baghdad for an indefinite period.

Without ammo, helmets, flak jackets or anything else that may be considered protective.

14. Nice to hear that chickenhawk coward lying POS Chambliss has
no problem with extending the tours of the Guard and Reserve. Of course, he wouldn't know what that's like. :grr: :grr: :grr: Maybe he should ask Max Cleland! I hate that motherf#$%r Chambliss! :grr: :grr: :grr:

I don't know about Zell Miller's military record. All I know is that he's a DINO and I would expect this from him.
