Rumsfeld Query No Shock to Soldier's Wife
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:39 p.m. ET

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Regina Wilson wasn't entirely surprised to see her husband, a guardsman bound for Iraq, on television Wednesday challenging Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with a tough question.

``He is always like that,'' she said. ``I don't think he understands the concept of biting one's tongue. It wouldn't matter if it was Bush himself standing there. He would have dissed him the same.''

..more at AP..

25. Well, the Pentagon (via AP) says he's a "Disgruntled" Soldier...I guess
the applause in the background from the 2300 soldiers there implies that we can assume that they are all disgruntled soldiers...

26. Blacken his name? How about how long does this poor guy have to live!
I seriously wonder if someone can do some tracking and see how long he lives before he becomes a name and picture shown by Aaron Brown at the end of NewsNight or on The Lehrer Report at the end of the show when they do their tributes.

I'm serious...I wouldn't put it past these fascist scum bags like Crummy Rummy to put this poor guy on a dangerous duty that gets him killed....

Is anyone just out of curiousity tracking the "disgruntled" soldiers that speak out or question the Pentagon and Rumsfeld and how long and what percentage of them "make it"? :eyes:

9. I heard the clip on the BBC World Service this AM...no one booed
the soldier....I just heard what seemed to be a shocked gasp of surprise.

When he finished asking why they had to go to dumps to find material to protect their vehicles, Rumsfeld gave the most arrogant answer imaginable.

He should have been lynched right there....

51. He gave the standard. It`s Clintons fault answer. The soldier
does not get the point however. Or he just does not give a damn. That he is a part of a war crime. He just evidently wants to survive one. Along with his compadres. And I don`t blame him. But his problem is Bu$h. The domestic threat to our constitution of We the People. Is not in Iraq. It is squatting in Al Gore`s White House.

Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 04:53 PM by GreenArrow
The soldier would have called Der Rummer onto the carpet for sending him to fight in a bullshit war, a war founded on lies and greed, and buttressed with hate and ignorance. Instead, his focus was on some sort of Star Wars-type, Stormtrooperesque body armor, that GOD given right.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Rummy on this one. "Yours is not to reason why, yours is but to do or die."

He administers their policies, or lack thereof, and catches the blame. GWB remains pure and blameless to conservative voters. Lack of armor? It's surely the evil Pentagon's fault, not Our Leader.

40. Oh, and we've made such inroads by playing nicey nice?
Save all your sappy sentiment for the Oprah show. The repugs have trashed every Democrat they possibly could in the worse possible way. Remember John Kerry's war medals and record? Or Max Cleland? Or how they dragged the Clintons through the mud at every turn? Or how they trashed Al Gore after his long years of service to his country?

They're playing us for a bunch of fools and you want us to act like fools even more by jumping on their "support the troops no matter what" mantra. Well, I for one, will not. I support the troops who were smart enough to vote for John Kerry knowing that he had actually been in a war and would've been a better choice for them.

P.S. You may want to use the spellcheck on your posts. Your spelling puts you in a class with the Freepers.

Voted for Kerry, so did my husband we are a military family. Both registered democrats.

I'm fully aware of what it means, to be torn between the person you love and the uniform and job they perform. How he might very well be heading to Iraq in Jan. I reminded every day How much I hate this war and disagree with it. There is always in my mind the idea of trying to imagine my life with out him, the talk I’ll have to give our 6 year old daughter. I have to prepare myself mentally for that. I do not need to explain myself to you. But I was willing to try for the sake that we are suppose to be on the same side.

I'm not asking you to embrace it, only consider the whole picture before you run off with verbal diarrhea or angry sentiments. Your blanketing a statement on an entire community of people who are your potential allies?

Just because the Repugs swallow low on the totem poll of slimy tactics, doesn't mean you have to shame yourself by playing their game on their terms. Be angry, so am I.. but focus that anger where it belongs.

49. I do consider the whole picture......
and I still stand by what I said. If they voted for Bush then I have no sympathy or compassion for them and they need to quit their whining about their particular situation. I never said I didn't support troops such as you and your husband who voted for Kerry.

I feel no shame whatsoever in saying what I did. I'm being honest about my feelings. When people are ignorant enough to fall for the lies and propaganda of this administration, then they get what they deserve and shouldn't expect sympathy when things don't go their way. I made no blanket statements about ALL military people.

And for your information, my husband and I were "military family" with a brand new baby during the VietNam war, so I know what it's like to be in your situation. However, we had no choice in the matter back then because there was a draft and your life was ruled by "will I get called up or not?" I had hoped people would've learned something by that, but the real history is not taught in schools, so it seems we're doomed to repeat our mistakes.

46. They may not have
...the guy joined the USAF well before 9/11, during the CLINTON administration. He only affiliated with the Guard after he did his USAF tour. The article does not mention political affiliation. And neither he nor his ex seems enthused with the administration. Maybe he affiliated because he knew he'd be pulled back in any event. Hard to say without knowing more about him.

Also, the headline is inaccurate, but I guess the story sounds better if the NYT says WIFE, instead of Ex-Wife. Even if they quote the girlfriend at the end!

U.S. Army reservists escape court-martial

~snip~

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The U.S. military will not court-martial 23 Army reservists who refused a mission transporting fuel along a dangerous road in Iraq, but they will face less severe punishment, an official said Monday.

The soldiers from the 343rd Quartermaster Company, based in Rockhill, N.C., may be assigned extra duties or face reductions in rank, military spokesman Lt. Col. Steve Boylan said.

...but I shudder to think what this poor fellow's Chain of Command will do to him for his "candid" question. Even if they agree with him, rest assured, there will be repercussions for this. I wore my John Kerry t-shirt one day on base (The really cool "retro" one with blue rings around the neck and sleeves) and got more than one comment like, "Maybe you should enlist in Canada's Navy", or "Freakin' Commie". It's unfortunate, but it seems the ones who get hurt the most by this administrations policies are it's strongest supporters. I just don't get it.

43. the Bush administration's Insidious use of hypocrisy
I find it interesting that Kerry got slammed for voting against the now infamous 87 billion supplemental bill. The charge was that "if John Kerry had his way he would have left the troops high and dry" In practice that obviously would not have happen because of his vote. no one seemed to have taken the time to understand the difference between Kerry's vote in the senate, and Bushes use of funds as commander in Chief. When kerry made a vote on principle he made it knowing the congress would ultimately not leave troops high and dry. Bush in practice is not supplying our troops.
