New threat to aviation: food contamination
FOOD contamination could be the latest threat to aviation security, an expert told an international conference in Bahrain yesterday. Food safety and security are now at the forefront of passenger concern, said London-based Castle Kitchens founder and director Erica Scheward.

"Bioterrorism, including chemical and physical contamination, could be a major risk posed to aviation catering security," she told the second Middle East Catering Conference, which ended at the Gulf Hotel yesterday....

"Much of the aviation security regulations are now aimed at preventing the entry of bombs or weapons into the aircraft. "The capacity of the terrorist cannot be underestimated. They may resort to a new route by which the meals served on aircraft could be contaminated." Also there are chances that the pilots could be incapacitated through food poisoning, said Ms Scheward.

"The poisoning may not be at the point of delivery. Anybody supplying juice or ingredients for meals on flights could be the target of terrorists," she noted. "It is a fact that airline caterers use quality suppliers, but there should be radical overhaul methods to deal with supply chain mechanisms."

3. The effect this sort of scaremongering has on me...
...is a general numbing, instead of the desired effect. What is the media's point in printing stuff like this? To sell more copies? If it's to strike terror in my heart, theyre failing. The more of this sort of thing I hear, the less attention I pay.

I figure, if a grain of ricin has my name on it, it's going to find me, whether it's on the subway, or in that plasticine brown stuff they pass off as "chicken" on airplanes.

Btw, Bb, you know what I was hoping "New threat to aviation: food contamination" was going to be about? I was hoping it was about the threat of aviation to the food supply -- and thus, environmental concerns were having an impact on the airline industry. I'm such an optimist. LOL

(I'm in California, see, where our milk supply contains traces of rocket fuel! :scared:)

5. This is easy to fix--just cease serving airline "food"
In August I flew out of Charlotte Douglas Airport. There were TONS of food places along the concourses.

If you wanted to eat the "food" the airline put on the plane, you had to give them money, so I just grabbed some food in the concourse and took it on board with me.

So just make the airlines quit bringing that disgusting slop on the plane, and the "problem" will be solved.

6. Why is this even an issue?
Why aren't we worried about the contamination we already know about in our regular food sources? *cough* rocket fuel *cough*

7.  "...at the forefront of passenger concern..."
:wtf:

It's now come full circle to where every lowlife and bottomfish is making a buck off of the terrorists.

The worst thing that could happen to some of them is that terrorism just goes away and they have nothing to sell any more.

Or scare us into buying.

8. Terrorists busy as little bees...
... tainting packages of cocktail peanuts. That's about the only thing in the way of food I remember on most flights....

9. LOL Recent air travel concerns: getting felt up & possible bad food
Maybe kinky security workers could just pat everyone down and then decide who needs to be fed and who doesn't. That way, nobody would feel left out while watching others get frisked and the possible victims of tainted food could be limited somewhat!
</sarcasm>

10. But the airlines don't feed passengers anymore
I flew 3 weeks ago. Got a bag of peanuts and a teeny glass of juice.

Anyone who falls for this nonsense story hasn't been on an airplane in a loooong time.
