Yoko Ono (news) is in a giving mood these days, especially when it comes to doling out music from John Lennon's musical archives.
On Tuesday, the day before the 24th anniversary of Lennon's assassination, and just months after sifting through the former Beatle's musical vaults for material for the recent Capitol releases Acoustic and Rock 'n' Roll, his widow has given permission to a Broadway writer-director to use three rare Lennon tunes for the upcoming Broadway musical Lennon.
A pair of the new songs--"India, India" and "I Don't Want to Lose You"--have never been published and exist only on private recordings. The other tune, "Cookin' (In the Kitchen of Love)," got a go-around when Ringo Starr (news) released it in 1976, but was never officially pressed on wax by Lennon.
Lennon begins previews at Broadway's Broadhurst Theater July 7. The show, which is described by producer Don Scardino as "the story of Lennon as lightning rod and how he defined the times and how the times defined him," will first debut in a warm-up run at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater in April.
Lennon, meanwhile, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday, 24 years to the day after being gunned down outside his New York apartment. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/eo/20041208/en_music_eo/15479
