~snip~

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A car bomb exploded in a busy Mosul market Thursday and mortar rounds struck near the Italian Embassy and an Iraqi National Guard base in Baghdad, killing three civilians and wounding at least seven.

Shiite figures supporting Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most senior Shiite cleric in Iraq (news - web sites), also were expected to make an announcement later Thursday regarding efforts to form a coalition of political parties and independents to run in next month's election, a source said.

Two Iraqis were injured and hospitalized after the car bomb exploded in eastern Mosul, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Hastings said. Iraqi policeman Hassan Ahmed said the blast happened in an eastern Mosul fruit and vegetable market.

Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, has been the scene of regular attacks against U.S. and Iraqi forces by insurgents aimed at derailing the country's reconstruction ahead of next month's elections.

1. This city will be harder to make dust out of.
I think it has about 3 million people. We can chew up all these little cities for lunch but this one will be different.

2. I agree...
The USA is doomed in Iraq. I just wonder how many more have to die before the murikans figure it out. :(

3. That's not true......
They're going to have "free elections" in January come hell or high water (probably hell first) and then we'll proclaim they have a "democracy" and everything will be hunky dory.

Why are you such a pessimist (realist)?

(major sarcasm here)

5. Afghanistan had elections, stuff's hunky dory over there right?
well maybe except for the war lords and taliban ruling most of the country, oh and that pesky 239% increase in poppy production - but that's just good ol' amurikan-style entrepreneurial growth! bet it's a big money maker too, and amurkins know as long as moneys being made all is good! (serious sarcasm off)

8. From the Baghdad attack...
