Cell phone calls in flight?
http://money.cnn.com/2004/12/09/technology/personaltech/cellphones_inflight/index.htm?cnn=yes

The Federal Communications Commission said that at its Dec. 15 meeting it will discuss possible revisions to rules prohibiting cell phone use on commercial flights. That's the first step of the process needed to lift the ban

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. I was on a plane yesterday and thought the same thing and wanted to
ask someone with better sense than I have for an answer.

At least someone else has thought of that question.

13. Not only is this annoying, it would wreak havoc on the cellphone networks
People pull this crap right now, but the plane is moving so fast it jumps too fast to different celltowers and screws up the networks.

15. actually not
The trick is pretty simple (at least the Airbus/Icarelink/ Globalstar)
: place an antenna on board the plane that transmits the GSM signal to a satellite network. Not only does it work (the phone signal does not reach the ground anyway), but it also means money for the airline.

7. Amtrak has a "quiet car" on its Acela
will planes have no-calling sections? or will there be a choice to be on a phone equiped plane or not?

9. Then there's the ring tone on Gareth's phone
you know, from "The Office". I crack up when I hear that one... just imagining Gareth whipping it out of his holster, all self-important, so Tim can say "COCK".

12. yeah, cell phones barely hold calls across town, let alone 40,000 feet
above the earth. most believe, including industry experts, that it is highly unlikely that cell phones could be used on the hijacked planes of 9-11:

11. Republicans will love this...
New money, upper middle class will love the new opportunity to brag.

I can see it now, "OH WE HAD A GREAT TIME...PICKED UP A TOWN CAR AT THE AIRPORT -WENT TO RUTH CHRIS - HAD A FAAAABULOUS MEAL - STAYED AT THE RITZ CARLTON....YADA, YADA, YADA....TIFFANY'S OFF TO SMU WHEN WE GET BACK, SHE'S PLEDGING WITH THE TRI DELTS YOU KNOW"

Republicans must impress the neighbors in the seats around them.

17. planes are so freaking noisy you probably wouldn't hear many conversations
or ring tones anyway. they could have a silent-mode rule.
