Reuters e-mail tells journalists of job cuts
http://de.news.yahoo.com/041210/295/4c0nl.html

London (pts) - The world's largest wire agency Reuters http://www.reuters.com is to axe up to 100 jobs from its news bureaux around the world due to expansion in China and India. Reuters said around four per cent of its 2,300 editorial staff would be affected by the restructuring. It expects to save 440 million pounds (636.45 million euros) by 2006. As the Media Guardian http://www.mediaguardian.co.uk reports, journalists were told of the news by e-mail.

According to the Media Guardian, David Schlesinger, global managing editor of Reuters, told journalists via e-mail that 100 jobs would be affected. He later said that some bureaux would lose "a journalist or two", while around 50 posts would be affected by "migrating jobs" to offices in Bangalore, Toronto and Singapore. He added that hiring journalists in China and India would rectify the losses by the end of 2005. "It's very traumatic but in terms of the coverage we are able to give to subscribers and in terms of the size of the organisation there is virtually no change."

Whee! Outsourcing to China and India!

1. Consolidated Freightways in Richfield Ohio was a tad more tacky
Imagine being a driver for CF, coming on Labor Day 2002 and finding a "recorded" message on your answering machine saying "Your workplace closed up its doors and you have no job" (something to that effect).

2. You think journalists in China and India might be used to cover
Chinese and Indian news? Hmmmm? I hate outsourcing. I don't see this as outsourcing. It could well be, we need more journalists in India and China, and it isn't really cost effective to pay our guys from X country, or Y country to go there, (travel, lodging, meals, etc.), how about we hire some Chinese people, or Indian people to cover the news in their own country?

Some things just make sense.

6. I bet the new India and Chinese jobs won't just be covering
India and China. I find it interesting that now journalists are being outsourced to India and China. It won't be long before all these big formerly American buisnesses are owned and totally run (or at least a competitor that grew up and won the competition) by Chinese and Indians (except for the actual spkespeople who have to appear American, until that last bit is gone, of course)

5. What I find most alarming about this article:
It expects to save 440 million pounds (636.45 million euros) by 2006.

...no longer expressing monetary comparison to the USD?
