Ohio Club Shooter Obsessed With Band
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The man who shot former Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three other men to death at a nightclub was obsessed with the heavy metal band and made bizarre accusations against the group, a one-time friend said.

Nathan Gale apparently believed Pantera musicians were trying to steal his identity and the lyrics to songs he had written, former friend Jeramie Brey told The Columbus Dispatch in Friday's editions.

1. this account corroborates what someone in the metal mayhem room..
of Soulseek was posting right after the incident. There were a lot of insensitive comments there that night, and many understandably didn't believe the guy was actually there. But the following snip was exactly what he had described; Dime being grabbed and shot in the head multiple times, point blank. I feel badly for Vinnie Paul, who had to witness his brother's murder.

Gale dodged two band members, grabbed Darrell Abbott and shot him at least five times in the head, witnesses and police said.

2. damn -- such a shame
this guy obviously needed help as asstested to by his former friends. if it turns out the military discharged him for mental instability, i do hope they made arrangements for medication and didn't just dump into the world with a killer's education and a head full of bad thoughts.

but, i guess we are going to be seeing a lot more of this when people are allowed to leave iraq.

3. how much are you willing to bet
That the shooter used hardwear that was illegal under the Assult weapon ban? With that many shots I figure he had to have a high volume clip assuming it was a pistol.

I bet everything he had was legally purchased before the ban expired.

9. I'd be very interested to know about his military career
specifically, if he saw any action in the Mideast. It ran from Feb. 2002 to Nov. 2003.

11. This guy shouldn't be considered a Marine
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 12:00 AM by ridgerunner
Just because someone was in the service does not make them a vet. I saw a lot of people wash out in bootcamp. Should I consider them fellow vets?

This fellow was a fanatic, that's all. Anybody who gets so wrapped up into anything that it preoccupies their life is dangerous IMHO.

As far as the weapon he used goes, I read in another article that he reloaded, so I doubt if he used anything that couldn't be bought at any local gun shop today.

And yeah, the Marines probably did throw him out because he was crazy. From the tone of the article a lot people knew he was crazy.

14. i agree, chemical brain problems
don't give a damn if you are in the military or not -- the only bearing the military has for me is if it gave him the know-how and the means -- and still it isn't the military's fault -- it would just be human, if the marines knew he was mentally unhinged, that they didn't unleash him on society.

if they discharged him for being mental, they needed to keep him in therapy of some kind.

but still -- you can't blame anyone but HIM for killing people. period.

16. Well, I don't think
anyone needs the military to teach them how to shoot somebody point blank in the head. And I doubt if the Marines let him take any weapons home with him. So honestly, I'd say that the military is i no way responsible for the know-how or the means

13. There are some really compassionate people on this thread

The guy died. Three other people--as far as I know, NOT celebrities--also died.

I'm not taking any position on gun control or the military, simply because I don't know enough about what went on. But I sure have the class not to be rude and heartless about a multiple homicide, particularly when we're three years into the "war on terror" and we're supposed to have considerably improved our nation's security.

Dimebag hasn't gotten nearly as much attention as Reagan did when he died, and his death was expected. I would say to anyone who feels the need to be pointlessly inconsiderate, go cheney yourselves.

15. romf (right on mf)
i'm not the biggest metal fan in the world, but i know dimebag contributed greatly to the the language. my metal bros, they are are not well with this and i feel for them. it's whitesnake all over again and it sucks.

we came to age with these guys as our heros. we learned to play guitar or drums based on the inspiration guys like Dimebag provided us.

as the wife of a professional musician i know well the obsession fans can have toward their beloved. mentally unstable people are drawn to bands and journalists for some reason. this can happen to anyone. at this very moment my husband is talking to an old friend on the phone on this very subject and they are happy none of their nutty fans never went postal on them when they moved on.

you just never know what will set people off.

17. Yeah, my brother is a drummer in a heavy metal band
They're all pretty torn up about it. I didn't even know who he was, but I still feel sorry for the guy, and I respect what he contributed to music. He surely didn't deserve what he got.

18. i've had this conversation 10 times today
metal has become dangerous in a way it was never meant to be. between being burned in unsafe clubs and being shot by insane fans -- it's a different game now.

but, rock on bros -- that's all we can do.

Band mates praise slain guitarist
Damageplan also remembers bodyguard killed in gunman's attack
Associated Press

DALLAS - Slain heavy-metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott had a heart "twice as big as the state of TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!"

With a flurry of exclamation points, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott paid homage to his brother and Damageplan band mate Friday, trying to put into words the enormity of what he called "our immeasurable loss."

"With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, DIME will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his HEART!!," Vinnie Abbott said in a statement.

"He gave it all everyday to each and every one of us and our lives have forever been hollowed without him. ... Thanks to all of you for reaching out to us in this time of our immeasurable loss. REST IN PEACE BROTHER DIME!!!!!!"
