News Finds Kerik in Cash Conflict (NYDN - Kerik received gifts, cash)
Wow. It just keeps getting deeper and deeper for Bernie. }(

http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/261266p-223749c.html

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik accepted thousands of dollars in cash and gifts without making proper public disclosures, a Daily News investigation has revealed.
Kerik failed to report the gifts on financial disclosure forms he was required to file with the city as head of the both the NYPD and, before that, the Department of Correction.

<snip>

The probe revealed that for many years, one of Kerik's main benefactors was Lawrence Ray, the best man at Kerik's 1998 wedding, according to Ray, other sources and checks shown by Ray to The News.

Ray and another Kerik pal, restaurant owner Carmen Cabell, helped bankroll Kerik's 1998 wedding reception, contributing nearly $10,000.

Ray also gave Kerik nearly $2,000 to buy a bejeweled Tiffany badge that Kerik coveted when he was Correction commissioner.

And Ray said he gave Kerik $4,300 more to buy high-end Bellini furniture when Kerik allegedly griped that he couldn't afford to furnish a bedroom for a soon-to-be born daughter.

The city's Conflicts of Interest Board requires officials to report any gifts of $1,000 or more.

8. I doubt it, in fact, Bush & Co. couldn't be more embarrassed.
I'm sure they thought that this attempt to prop up another of their cronies wouldn't be questioned by the media, and in fact would be hailed and glorified, much in the way this Administration uses 9/11 to its benefit and the media continues to let them get away with it.

The Kerik background broke in the print media, with the seeds being planted early after his nomination. There are still some actual journalists in print media, and amazingly, their writings outshouted the CNN types who were all aflutter over Bernie.

It was interesting watching Senators Biden and Hagel this afternoon; they refused to comment on Kerik's background and instead just said he did the right thing by stepping down. I wonder even more now what the whispering in Washington has been like since the nomination.

10. The WH misjudged Kerik. They thought he had the balls to play their...
...game of manufactured reality. In fact, Kerik's illegal dealings were what made him so attractive to Bush. But Kerik's balls weren't so big, after all and, now, the WH looks pretty sloppy for choosing him.

"It doesn't take away from Bernie's heroism. It doesn't take away from his decency," said ex-Mayor Rudy Giuliani. "He made a mistake. It cost him a job"

26. Chimpy and Kerik..
are two scum bag peas in a fucking pod. All this bullshit about Fearless Leader not knowing about Kerik's details is beyond belief. Latest-Thug-of-Note Bernard was just the ticket for our Simian Neo-Fascist Imperial Wizard. Chimpy just thought he'd give it a shot. The arrogant POS.
I long for the day when the fucking prick goes down in the most humiliating way possible.

From the day he was appointed, he got the thumbs down from DU. Now Bush has gotten his first post-election pie in the face. This is the most cheerful I've felt since November 2!

17. Exactly! I still can not stand the sight of Giuliani to this day because
of how he shamelessly defended the NYPD during those police shootings. People look at Giuliani like he's Christ himself after 911. 911 or not, I'll never forget how that asshole denigrated Louima and Diallo. NEVER.

(snip)

Kerik, who never rose above the lowest rank of detective, was picked over senior NYPD chiefs with decades of experience. His chief asset was his unwavering subservience to Giuliani. With his former chauffeur in the top position, Giuliani was assured that his word would be law within the police department.

While Kerik made a show of reaching out to minority communities, he did little to stem the hostility toward both Giuliani and his own “zero-tolerance” policing methods. After lawyers for the cops who killed Diallo succeeded in moving the case to Albany and securing an acquittal, Kerik added insult to injury by clearing them of any internal disciplinary charges. The action amounted to an endorsement of an operation in which officers fired 41 bullets at an unarmed man whom they had not even identified.

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/dec2004/keri-d04.shtml

The two (Giulani and Kerik) are definitely cut from the same cloth, aren't they? Kerik's promotions look like some kind of repayment for being a good lapdog -- either that or he's got some really incriminating information on Giuliani.

11. I want to know about the 6 million dollar stock deal
"In 2002, he joined the board of Taser International. Last month, as Taser's president and chief executive each sold $20 million of stock, Kerik sold his for $5.7 million.

Recent disclosures have questioned the safety of Taser's electrical guns, which are used by thousands of police departments"

12. Josh Marshall calls it "The Single Nanny Theory."
In other words, this isn't about the $6 million sweetheart stock options deal with Taser, or about Bernie spying on the lovers of his Saudi boss, or about Bernie accepting thousands of dollars from his cronies.

This is about a nanny, silly goose. :D

14. The Nanny theory falls way flat!
How can anyone believe that an administration which has so arrogantly abbrogated the Geneva Convention, not to mention the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, with their self-serving theory that in Terra-ist times, the president has absolute power, would back off because of one illegal immigrant. If they can justify torturing people. why the hell would they hesitate to dismiss any issue of household help as being inconsequential. And you know their media cronies would have supported that position entirely. No, no, no - Bush was afraid that some REALLY bad facts about Kerik were going to surface. I suspect it had to do with his aborted assignment in Iraq. Because no one ever gave an explanation for his abrupt and premature departure from that much bally-hooed assignment.

The Nanny thing sounds fishy and this guys probably got some serious skeletons in the closet and he's not a media darling. I think the media was getting a little to close to something. Maybe it will come out but I doubt it.

28. Typical Repug spin from Rove...Nannygate/Clinton...after all EVERYONE
has had trouble with Nannies...trying to cover over that Kerik is such a sleaze that his stench was so foul that they couldn't bury it no matter how hard they tried.

And, the Media Whores just play along...so sad another wonderful potential Presidential Cabinet member has a problem with a nanny...and after all...how many of the Press Pods use the same "illegal nannies and don't pay any SS taxes on them. They are too busy for day care outside the home and btw...the nanny also has to run the dishwasher and the vacuum as part of their job...Ugh :puke:

20. Bernie's Saudi scandal - WP 12.08
Kerik's Surveillance Activity in Saudi Arabia Is Disputed
Cabinet Pick Is Accused of Carrying Out Hospital Chief's Agenda

The autobiography of Bernard B. Kerik, President Bush's nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security, recounts a difficult time 20 years ago when he was expelled from Saudi Arabia amid a power struggle involving the head of a hospital complex where Kerik helped command a security staff.

In the book, Kerik described his discomfort at having to investigate employees' private lives, but said it was necessary because of the Saudis' laws prohibiting drinking and mingling of the sexes in public. "It was challenging, negotiating such a closed, rigid system and trying to find justice in laws that, to an American, were unjust," he wrote. He was expelled from Saudi Arabia in 1984, the book said, after he had a physical altercation with a Saudi secret police official who was interrogating him.

Since he was nominated last week to be homeland security secretary, however, nine former employees of the hospital have said that Kerik and his colleagues were carrying out the private agenda of the hospital's administrator, Nizar Feteih, and that the surveillance was intended to control people's private affairs. Feteih became embroiled in a scandal that centered in part on his use of the institution's security staff to track the private lives of several women with whom he was romantically involved, and men who came in contact with them, the ex-employees said.

~snip~

"Kerik was a goon," said John Jones, a former hospital manager, who said he felt harassed by the security team. "They were Gestapo. . . . They made my life so miserable."

They - Rudy Giuliani and Bernard Kerik - should have known better. Promoting Kerik to serve in President Bush's cabinet as America's top anti-terror official was, in the end, an act of monumental hubris. For Kerik's tough-cop image concealed a tendency, politely speaking, to cut corners.
